ZIP or Hard drive?

What do you all recommend? Would 100 MB be enough for sampling and saving sequences? Or 250MB ZIP or just a hard drive? And if you recommend an external SCSI HD what size?

I intend on doing a LOT of music.... Has anyone had a hard drive to crash?

the way I feel right now....i'd hafta say a good scsi drive.....as long as you're not gonna do too much plugging/unplugging of the drive from the scsi port then you'll be fine and it sounds like a great idea if you have a good internal zip drive....if not, then I wouldnt even consider it......

btw....i say cop that 250 mb internal zip drive mane.....

Why not both? One could certainly be the backup of the other.

And yes, you do want to backup your music. Just do a search for "Help my Zip does not work anymore" and you will find lots of "Well, no, I cannot use my <non-zip> backup since I do not have one."

I think I will go for the EXT. Zip 100 MB and CDROM combo and intergrate a hard drive if my needs aren't met. I want to keep the 3 1/2, just for quick sounds.

Disks, Drives etc. And describe the way they should be utilized including backing up DATA.

I hate messin with SCSI. I save on a Zip 250 from the MPC and then save whats on the 250 to my PC as a backup. Plus its easier to edit samples on the PC.

CF media. A 32Meg card is used to transfer data to the MPC, from which it is saved to 512Meg CF card in MPC format. When the 512 is full, it is put in the PC and a CD is made from it. Somewhere in there the data is also put on the MPC hard drive.

Data is duplicated in several places in different formats:

1) Original samples are still on PC Hard drive
2) Duplicate set of samples are on MPC hard drive for easy retrieval
3) Duplicate set of samples are on MPC format CD.

I can still get to the data if even there are two points of failure. PC and HD go out, I still have the CD's. CD and HD go out I still have the PC. And so on. The likely scenario is that one device will fail. That device is easily replaced and the data can be easily reconstructed from one of the other 2 backups.

You sould certainly do nearly the same with Zips, but I refuse to use them.

People's problem with backups is:

1) They do not do them
2) If they do, they only backup to the same medium. That is, they backup the Zip to another Zip. What happens when the Zip drive itself goes out? Can't get to either of the Zips then until the drive is replaced. This can be pretty awkward if they are using an external SCSI Zip which cannot be easily replaced from a local computer shop.

...great stuff to be sure. My question is, I have the MPC with Zip installed. I also have an external SCSI CDRom. I just purchased CDRW to use as backup for my MPC beats, samples, etc. I do not have any PC backups as the one time I used them, (I have an internal zip on my PC) they corrupted/changed the data info on my zip disks once I tried to access them again from the MPC. Is this due to different formats? Are my orig MPC zips and hopefully now, my CDRW's going to be enough to serve as backup(s)? I know nothing of CF really, other than toting a 256 CF around on an mp3 walkman.
Note: On the whole, I have yet to do anything other than load samples into MPC via sample disks at this juncture...no PC use in conjunction or editing software, no MIDI keys, nothing yet (due to financial issues). Any help with this crucial part of this process is appreciated.

Ok, so it seems that my SCSI CDR does not read CDRW discs. At least that is the way it appears. I put a disc in it and switch the medium and it says SCSI NOT READY. Now that is an issue. With no PC backups due to the no connecticity/file change issue that seems unexplained, (when I used a zip once on the PC that had MPC info on it, the next time I used it in the MPC, there were files missing and extra characters in the file names...for example, HARDHITTING.SND might read HARDHITTING?$/.SND and then it would not be usable or found by the MPC). I am not sure what to do, as it seems I can only backup to the same medium and as mpc3000 said, that is the worst option to go with...not only that but this is extremely tedious. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Man, this file rename thing has been covered so many times. Do a search through the forums for something like "character limit or filename problems" There are answers everywhere to your particular question.
