I'm a hardware dude. However I found that the more gear I had the less creative I was. A lot of the things I bought was on the strength of "pros". In actuality, I didn't need all that sh*t so I sold it and my music still sounds as good, if not better, than those "pros".

depends on your preference. its all about the end product anyway. who cares how you make it? i prefer hardware because cant stand the SW interface. just like women, i like to feel it in my hands...

the problem with people and technology is that if u don't know how to use it then it is useless. if i throw half of these cats in the hit factory (when it was open) they wouldnt be able to come out with a hot track if they tried.

We all in here are having different conversations.
For one u have to ask yourself what it is you are trying to do. It's like some dude was talking about producers like kanye, pete rock and the rest of the producers that are extremely sample reliant useing old hardware. yes this is true but what if u dont sample and create all original music. he is obviously not taking into account what it took to record those records that they are sampling. so if u wanna just chop recordsand add drums to them then of course u are not going to need what a person that creates all original music. look at the album credits for all those producers he named and see where those tracks were recorded. i can make a full song in a triton, but would not be able to just release it cause there are extra steps that need to be taken to make a song a song.

i personally have different needs. i dont sample. i create everything strait out of my head for commercial release. i do work for labels, artists, tv and film. so my needs are to create a track from start to finish with vocals. so an mpc and a keyboard ain't gonna cut it.

it is like if u don't use a guitar in your music and dont play guitar then why would u buy one.

the point is buy what u need and take the time to learn it. also no your skills . if u play nothing but have a good ear for stealing other peoples music then just get some records and an mpc.

just keep in mind that publishing is the gift that keeps on giving and is the lifeblood of the music game and if u are giving up 50-100% of your publishing because the music is not yours then is being a producer really worth it. also let's say u finally place a track with let's say 50 cent do u want to run the risk of that track not making the album because they can't clear the sample. this is the reality of the music game that very few people want to recognize, but i see it happen to my friends who are sample reliant everyday. also what about when u submit a beat cd to an artist and then the following year his record comes out using the same sample u used?

if u are young learn an instrument and learn how to make songs, cause in the long run you will be in control of your own destiny.

All good points BUT, nowadayz it really doesn't matter if you play or sample. EVERYTHING can be got!!! If someone hear something they like they'll just get someone else to play it or resample it and if it's a major they'll hit you with a couple grand if your trying to sue and be done with it. Hiphop was created by "SAMPLING". I think people forget that. I play keyboard and sample myself, but that doesn't mean someone couldn't reproduce something I created. And sampling is not stealing to me unless you take the whole song and call it your own thats stealing. Actually alot of the first hiphop songs did this, so does that mean hiphop is NOT music??? Just using a piece from different songs and putting them together is called CREATION. And I'm tired of people saying sample-based productions aren't creative. So I guess Kool Herc, Afrika Bam, Grand Wiz Theodore etc. weren't creative???

again software is a tool just like any hardware. for all of you guys with all this talent what instruments do you play? when i make music i try to be orginal and do not take a sample from someone else and add a snare or kick and call that music mine.

here is a quote from espn website from spencer haywood on the age limit in the nba:

" Haywood, 56, went on to draw an analogy between basketball and music, pointing out that three or four decades ago a prospective musician would need to learn how to read sheet music and master an instrument before even thinking about playing in a band.

"Now you don't even have to sing, just show up and yell 'Let's get the party going' 15 times. Their mind is not able to create a sentence, so they come up with 'Your mama is a dog' and similar nonsense. It's just ignorant. I see basketball taking the same path. You don't even have to know your craft anymore."

this is a fact and most of you guys (not all) fall in this catoragy.

when i look at my software this how i use it.

vsti: my default project in cubase

battery - drums/percussion
intakt - drums hit/percussion sound effects
stylus rmx - for drum breaks(create my own drum loopsand load in stylus)
trilogy - bass sounds
atmosphere - pads
b4 - organ
lounge lizard - electric keys
fm7 - fm synth sounds
sampletank/sonik synth - synth sounds/strings/horns
hypersonic - filler sounds
virtual guitar electric edition - quitar
saxlab - sax

misc.

wavelab - mastering
acid 4 - remix/to change tempo and/or pitch
live 4 - just f*ck aroung with it (a present from my wife)
reason 3.0 - only use with live 4
cubase - my main daw
ravity 16 - rompler/use it with reason and live4.
recycle - chop my own beats made on the mpc2000.

my reason 3.0 default rack is basically setup the same way as my vsti.

i write r&b music which is drums, perc, bass, piano, electric keys, organ, guitar, pads, synths and sax as the solo instrument.

now where do you draw the line on technology? mpc2000, motif, etc are all technology compared to acoustic instruments. where is your technology line?

f*ck theory and lessons and whatever, what instruments do you play? can you sit down at the piano and play a complete song in time? can you pick up a guitar and play "long train running" (jeff baxter, the doobie brothers)? how about a disco song on the drums (disco are the easiest beats for drums)? or a funky bassline on a bass?

when you talk of talent what talent are you talking about? that talent that spencer haywood is talking about? or some real talent ?or some make believe sh!t, something to make you feel good about yourself? what kind of talent are you talking about?

who are you favorite mpc users? do you think they can program the mpc like marus miller, phil collins, blackmon (camero), harvey mason jr? i doubt it but these guys can sit down at acoustic instruments also. this is what i call talent.

my last question about this technology sh!t, if there was no cubase, protools, vsti, mpc2000, motif, etc would still be trying to be in this music business thing? if yes, doing what?

i ask because without cubase, vsti, mpc2000, motif you would really need some talent.

i think it is cool that you guys have each others back but be honest, how much talent do you personally have?

p.s. i just joined the group buy for gpo (garritan personal orchesta) and i signed up for a orchestration class at rutgers university this summer. point being, yes i love technology but i do go back and learn what i need to know to utilitize the tool to the fullest.

it is not about whether sampling is creative. i am not doubting that some of my favorite producers sample. in fact i have an admin deal with the same publisher that represents him and all he does is samples. so i know what the headaches are. and hip hop started with live bands backing mc's until it got too expensive. my point is that don't take a sample of pre-recorded music that other musicians, mixers, engineers and producers worked on whether u take .5 or 5 seconds of the track and say oh i made this song only on an mpc. that is plain ignorant because you were not the only person involved in the making of that song. and that couple of grand comment isn't true if u have a hit record on your hands. also times have changed rappers that are known for sampling have and will sue anyone that samples their voice. that to me right there showed me how hypocritical people are. how is chuck d suing BIG for using his voice in 10 crack commandments, or suing madonna and lenny kravitz for justify my love, when pe music was sample based.

Edit: just saw BG's post, Hip Hop Started with TURN TABLES!!! Not Backing Bands, the backing bands were hired because they couldn't sell a record with a vinyl backing, but hip hop was alive on the streets for years through the use of the first sampler, the Turntable.

end of edit.

Wow, for once I totally agree with DocMartin.

I hear you beat god, and Like I said, I feel you on most of your posts, this one is no exception. You are right, Sampling is contravercial, illegal, problematic, and hip hop. Like someone on a video said, we aren't supposed to be writing on walls either. Being accepted into the establishment isn't the goal for everybody. But if it is your goal you will have an easier time if you don't use samples. WE all know this, switching the debate from hardware versus software to sampling pro and con is ridiculous. Just to shut that down quick, what's in a Triton? Samples. What's in most of these new VSTi's with mad drums and bass sounds? Samples. They are just licensed, pre made for you, by someone else.

You let other people comb through sounds for you, give you a limited set and then pick from the same set that thousands of other people are picking from. When you do the illegal sample thing, you are picking from all recorded material, or even from stuff you get from the field, and much of the stuff on vinyl is rare and not available to most, so you get to choose sounds that wouldn't sell to thousands of people like a triton of motif would.

You are actually taking a deeper part of your craft by finding your own samples, even if it is illegal, it certainly is not illegitimate or unoriginal in and of itself, you can use it either way.
I can make full songs on a triton, or one of the radio shack keyboards. A triton is just a glorified one of those anyway, I don;t need a dope sample to make a dope track, but using a dope sample in a way that is hotter than the sample itself is a skill not too many people have, not even everyone's beloved kanye. You can pick a nice sample, but if you don't complement it with music that is equally as good or better, it's BS. People always talk about samplists as if they are the lowest kind, like a puffy or a straight jacker, they never call up the cats that really flip them and inspire the people who get into it.

I know plenty of cats that do the work you do, and they all talk about how bad sampling is and blah blah blah, but they all get these sampling CD's for their sounds, or worse, sample current hits for drums and sounds, or get loop libraries like the appleloops collections and string them into compositions and call their work original because they used legal samples.

Not for nothing, but to me that shyt is geigh, using samples someone else picked out for you and made sure you can't get sued for. Hip hop wouldn't exist if people cared about that shyt, "Oh I don't want to climb that fence, it's got barbed wire on it, I better just get a canvas and some oil paint and not paint trains and risk jail, hell I can sell a canvas and pretend I'm geigh too, geigh artists make more money anyway" what ever. (I'm really not homophobic, I just have a limited vocabulary.)

Being all against illegal sample but using sample based instruments and sample CD's then calling your work more original is such hypocracy. I know many engineers that say that kind of shyt, but what drums do they use? Bob CLearmountain samples!! Oooh!!! I bought a sample CD instead of digging for vinyl or micing a kit and playing myself. weak.

The point is, you end up having less creative control over your music because you limit that end of it, I make music with and without samples, I make drum sounds on synths and sample drum hits from vinyl, Every keyboard sound I put in a song of mine I synthesized from scratch, I didn't just dial up and tweak a preset, so who's more original now? Doesn't that sound like a stupid argument to you now?
I think looping a sample is more original than just loading up VST's or your motif and triton and fantom and just going through presets until you find a sound you like then recording a part, then doing it again with your fantom.
Get off your high horse and realize that nobody sweats you, and you shouldnt sweat anyone, we're supposed to be a community here, not try and down eachother for our working methods.

Like 4kXL said, MUSIC IS ART and Art IS A Matter of TASTE NOT METHOD ............

i agree, sampling is an art. my point is there are some folk here who thinks that they have a understanding of the art but they do not. the genuius in the business do have talent, like dr. dre he could entertain you on an acoustic instrument. dre know where the music is coming from but these talented kats here well ..

great point.

my point is that don't take a sample of pre-recorded music that other musicians, mixers, engineers and producers worked on whether u take .5 or 5 seconds of the track and say oh i made this song only on an mpc. that is plain ignorant because you were not the only person involved in the making of that song.
