Hey folks, thanks for the replies and questions.
I don't remember the MPC60 being noisy... but i can't say for definite, it was a while ago. I do remember _something_ being a noisy PITA back then... hmmm
I don't in fact see much difference with pro / amateur / bedroom setups, just a pro studio has much better acoustics and the neighbours don't complain when you crank it

I'll admit straight off that this is a particular bug bear of mine, noisy gear. Frankly, it doesn't matter if you are putting a beat together in your bedroom or mixing down the latest multi-platinum album, noisy gear is a PITA. It means your ears and brain get tired way quicker (ever worked in a noisy studio, then turned the noisy shit off at the end of the day, and said "aaaaaaaah, thats better". Constant tones are unarguably tiresome and totaly non-creative.
There are loads of cumcumstances where a noisy bit of gear messes up recording... The obvious one is at home, knocking togeter some beats, you want to just chuck something in there, a vocal or whatever, you put the mic up and - whhhhrrrrrrrrrrrr. Or you are at a big studio that records stuff in the control room (real world for example), again, you put up a mic to record a delicate shaker or whatever... whhhhhiiirrrrrrr. Or finaly, you are in the studio by yourself late at night / in the morning and you feel like putting something down, up goes the mic... you get the picture. I have always been a fan of recording stuff in the control room anyway.
Sure there are a multitude of ways ROUND these problems (put beats to tape for example), but then that takes time, and you want to change something etc it's inconvienient.
For me, a noisy bit of gear is NOT a problem to 'get around', it's a problem I don't accept. I know there are
ways to make fans quieter (as I said, I build my own super-quiet PC's), but I am not so sure about buying a £1500 bit of gear to have to mod straight out the box because it's noisy.
I dunno, I get the feeling I have annoyed some of you by asking this question, I dunno why? Yes, I am possably a little analy retentive about noisy fans, but it seems like a straightforward question to me. I am not trying to trash the MPC, honest! I want to buy one!
Anyway, if anyone fancies putting a mic about a metre away from their 4000, and recording the sound, would be great, Snap your fingers or speak as well, so there is something to judge the level against.
Cheers! Any more questions, please ask!
