In a desert island scenario, I would go with the 4K given that I had a deep sound library (and a midi controler). In a real world scenario, you probably need both. I also depends on your style of music. If you work mainly with samples, then definately the mp. If you are more musician oriented and have to go with only one at this time, then get the phantom.

the fantom is a nice piece with high quality sounds plus a sampler on board. you could make some hot songs with that on its own

biggest thing you gotta decide is how you like to work, either samples, or composing with thekeyboard.
Although you can do both with the mpc4k....you just gotta buy multisample sample cds if you want to play like the fantom.......otherwise sample vinyl.
