Pete Rock a 16-bit sell out.....

the thing is, 12-bit is just one small component to someones 'grimy' sound. i like the sound of my sp1200 or my fz-1, but its all about fx processing, compression, how you mix, or how you dont mix, etc, for me. shit you dont even need outboard fx if you want grimy, recording a sample to tape then sampling it back to your gear, whether its an mpc2000 or a 60, is still gonna be 'grimy'. i love dirty shit, but my definition is different because i dont really like alot of banging obtrusive drums, i like it sounding muffled and generally **** up. but i do agree that he should have probably stuck with the SP, since hes the master of it and all. the mpc2000 beats of his sound generic to me. did i say anything in this post?

There is more tyo 12 bit than just the sound, but the secrets are closely guarded, and initiates must be circumcized, twice.

Right On. I just smashed my MPC60 cause that thing totally sucked. Had them lame ass 16bit A/D convertors. Only had the 12bit playback. I want the TRUE 12bit. I ain't gonna make any music till I get my SP1200.
The MPC60 is GAY. Like I said, I smashed mine up. **** 16 bit.
Pete Rock is double GAY for using the MPC2000XL. I'm gonna smash all his records, esp. the new really gayer ones.

Binger, your music sounds great (I've told you that before) but grimey it ain't, doesn't matter though, grimey doesn't mean better, its just a preference. let us underdogs have our day in our forum ya bums.

But anyway, to make this a little serious, A lot of producers when they get noteriety they switch up equipment and their music suffers for it, because they got bank they go way too far, and lose touch with the tools that they had mastered up to that point. They get sucked into the hype of equipment and more more more. It happened to pete, it happened to rza, it happes to so many cats they call it the sophmore curse. It isn't about 12 bit or whatever, but it's about switching your gear up you start from zero again, no one really takes the time to master a machine completely anymore, and now machines have so many features that you probably can't master them completely in your lifetime. The SP is a different story, it has such hands on control, and a well thought out design that despite it's limitations it is very flexible with what it has. The Emax and the 60 still take me to school all the time, any yall know I know my shyt, I'm just saying there is more to using these machines than just getting accomplished what you you can imagine before hand, and necesity being the mother of invention, limits is the breeding ground of creativity, it's just about how you approach them limits.

The point I want to make... I think it is terrible to LIMIT yourself. Sometimes people get burned out on a piece of gear or an instrument. They try something else out to see if it brings a spark.
Sometimes your creativity rides SO high that you could make a masterpiece on ANYTHING. I doesn't matter. Pete Rock could have been using a MPC2000XL back then and done the same greatness. He was inspired to the greatness. MPC was just a tool.
