and guys understand its not the gear its the records and the madman sampling them

Do not limit yourself by imposing "rules"...

... forget about midi, sampling, synthesis and the like for a minute and learn the basics of music (if ya havent already) ... whaz a C - whaz a D? whaz the difference? - how do they relate? ... whaz a 4/4, 7/8, 6/8? ... whaz a minor, major? .... what are chords, what are scales? - learn some scales - startout on the easyones - minors, majors or pentatonics ... and leave out the crazy ones at startout (ie: all the jazz ish ... ) ... dont do it tomorrow - ya should have done it already ...

... forget about other gear and use what ya have ...

... dont do hiphop, triphop, downbeat, techno, dnb, trance, progressive, or whateva ... thats just some linguistical terms easing the comunication bout music ... imo mainly invented for and by non musical dudes (and surely after the music itself ... ) ... make your own ish and call it as you like

Mixing:

If you feel a constant urge to turn the volume up, youre doing something wrong.

That helped me through a lot of mixing;)

Thats my interpetation of it(not sure if thats what jaem means). That is good advice i constantly give to myself.

Sometimes producers analyze music too much, if you do that, it can hurt. Its not bad to be a perfectionist, but it is if you loose the soul/creativity.

Dont try and learn everything, just learn the thing u need to know to make the kind of music u wanna make.

Like i use samples and synths to make my beats so why bother learning chords and scales? hip hop does not rely on typical music structures so that shit aint relavent to the music i wannna make.

all i need to focus on is finding dope sounds and putting them together in a way that sounds dope.

another thing if a beat is wack dont keep it, cos do u really wanna waste time mixing a wack track? it will just drain ur creative juices only work on tracks that spark ur interest otherwise producing will become tedious.

Flip it, flip it, change it, rearrange it.

hell, I even produced a beat once that was off of this Italian psychadelic b-movie soundtracks vinyl and just let the track play from begining to end. All I did was add some EQ. The track was so dope start to finish( killer bass line and horns) it would have been counter productive to chop it at all.

everyone I play the track for has no idea. (even the MCs that rapped on it)

and for the record.....

I do like chopping, but there is a prevailing attitude that you have to chop and filter to death...thats bull, and I chose to let it play with minimal EQ. Take it how you want its still dope.

Digging is just as important as making a beat......I dug for the beat
