NEVER underestimate the power of producing SONGS rather than BEATS. once the MC raps over your beat, it ainttt overrr. you can go back and flip shit even crazier now....you got more sounds to work with!

im all for the loop.

It depends on its context. I mean, I disagree with puffy style, sampling top 40 hits. But Even so, what about rock bands who do old covers?... that stuff can be just as good as the original, and even more original.......

Loops can be just as flipped as a chop: Its partly knowing what is good, and how to make it better-sometimes this means leave it alone.

Im pretty much sayin the same as Jaem, as Im all for the chop.......but why force it. Dont fix something that aint broke.

Plus you can loop things and take it completely out of its original context, and you would hardly recognize it as the same song without someone pointing it out.

Like the other day, I sampled a violin loop off of a mickey's mouse record. There isnt anybody gonna listen to that......and if they do, the sample was a backdrop to a children's story......I took it out of context and made something completely differant. Its context being a part of a story, not even a main entity on the entire album. If the loop wasnt even on the album, the album would not suffer.

plus I think its safe to say that all our mothers taught us to share.

Take time to listen to anything.
Take pride in your workspace and keep everything as clean as possible. Clean your equipment and it will be good to you. Dont take "grimey" too literally. LOL

And Im really feeling that "dont delete" rule. You could walk away, come back an hour, week even months later and your music will sound different to you. You may even like it.. Happend to me this weekend!

Do not become complacent. Just because you made one hot track doesnt make you dj premere, sitting there rocking that one track! Stay consistant and your music will stay at a certain level or just get better.

Never publicly display your work unless your comfortable that you've done your best. Perception is a muthafvkka. Especially first impressions. If you publicly showcase your track and its wack, and you knew it wasnt done, the perception of you might be a negative one right out the gate! You may have heat in the crib, but sometimes that first impression doesnt award you with a second chance. Excuses like, "but its not done" or "I was just messing around" doesnt help you.. If you tried your best, and its wack, then try again dont give up. Just dont showcase wack ish then tryna cop a plea after the negative reactions comes in.

You never know who's listening to your music!! (That's Real)

But, if you just dont give a fvck, then ignore all of this!! LOL

To seriously judge my own work, i know that
i need a 7-8hour sleep to know what next step is.
Or, even just throw it in the can.
I've often been surprised of what
differnce it makes for me.

Another thing i do, is to get out in a
venue to try to hear it in a loud PA,
and see's how people react.

In all, i use 3 different monitor system; a small one's(passive) divetech broadcast monitors, a larger swedish 80-system called ace-bass, a wooden affair with 4-way aktive speaker(very clean), and a small aktive DB-tecnology PA-system(12"). Though my studio room can't compensate
for that type of monitoring, i will have standing basswaves all around the house, but i can actually do some type of nearfield listening on them for a short while, and getting some PA-vibe.

sample from whatever the hell you want.

there will always be a sound on a record, no matter how wack it might look/be.

dont let your gear limit what you can do. some of the greatest music/hits have been made on the "cheesiest" pieces of gear.

dont try to be who you are not.

stop waisting so much energy trying to figure out how to get someone elses sound. use that energy to create your own.

have fun.

always have a back-up plan if you dont make gazzillions of dollars doing this. :roll:

think.

read.

learn to take compliments, as well as criticism.

and the list goes on.......

I don't know if anyone already said this one, but I wish I knew it at the beginning...

Put each "sound" into its own track. One for snares, one for kick, one for hihats, loud piano, background piano, etc.

If you wanna tweak a sound or drum or whatever, its a LOT easier to do if you have each of them seperated, instead of a single track for "DRUMS". I mean, you got 64 tracks per sequence (on the 2000xl, at least) so I suggest using them.
