say you had 3 bits of external gear; you'd connect midi out A to the first bit of kit's midi in. Then you connect the midi thru from that bit of kit to the midi in of piece of kit two. Then you'd connect the midi thru on that piece of kit into the midi in of piece of kit. The only thing stopping this is if you came across a bit of kit with no midi thru (eg: old boss drum machine or something)
Then you would have to set up the midi channels on your other kit to 1, 2, 3 (for example) and then set up 3 tracks on your mpc to midi A1, midi A2, Midi A3, etc.
In theory you could have 32 different bits of kit (or 32 different voices, eg: 4 banks on one keyboard, 8 on another, and so on) - but as mentioned above, it would be impractical. I use my 1k with a nord modular that has 4 different voices, so I use Midi 1, 2, 3 & 4 for those. I also use Midi B1 to send program changes to an effects unit.
You can get bits of kit that split/route midi signals for you if you don't think the 1k has enough.
