Yeah, I did sound the battle cry. But Pete Rock never repped the SP-1200, it;'s what he used, and he got with the 2000 a while ago, like almost 10 years, he's probably used other shyt too. don;t think he's a sell out, but they offered to pay him, and what did he say, every producer he knows owns at leasty one MPC, is that not true? I mean, how many producers dont own an MP? he didn;t say a 2000, so he could be talkin about cats that use the 60 even, there are quite a few.

Yeah, Doc, that independent control of the aliasing filter got me curious about how it sounds, but doubtful that it would stay here long. Maybe I'll find a Mirage rack real cheap somewhere. I saw one for 80, but that's still kinda pricey for what I want it for.

"He's getting his hustle on, or, he's just getting paid", is the holy grail of rebuttles - lol. I have nothing to say to that except, your right. However, I think it is shameless and ultimately, it seems, everyone nowadays is all about the bottomline which is the dollar. The mullah doesn't run me, and i've passed mad oppurtunities to get major bread because my integrity was on the line. Thats all i'm saying.. Thats all I really was trying to say from jump.

I'm sure you've heard this before....

Nah, apparently he's got a monthly DJ gig in the City, I think he got pissed at BBE and is trying to get some exposure but he knows too much to go with any label, so Its part of his exposure plan. I can't hate on him, the Xl is a good piece of gear compared to a lot of stuff, and you know, he may be using the XL to sample stuff from the SP so he gets more sample time on the SP, it beats chaining together 5 Sp-12000 like muggs did, I think that's kinda gay, two is alright, but damn, that's just lazy.

The guy from limp biscuit asked bruce forat to rackmount 5 SP-1200 for their tour, something I thought was mad gay,. but they never went through with it thank god. If anyone needs more sample time they should use another sampler or a rack like the emax instead of chopping up classic gear.

Oh yeah, limp biscuit uses 5 SP-1200 and they wack as hell.

Boogie: Your right. Not everyone is fourtante enough to be an a position where they can sustian they're habits, get paid good money, and not have to compromise they're desicion making process/life style to do so.

Elm: Word, 5 SP-1200s does seem mad over the top. Just cop a rack forreal. S950/EMAX make great companions.

Heres my final thought on Pete though:

I understand completely what ya'll are saying and why he's doing what he is doing. Having spent over 20 yrs in the game and then seeing new jacks like CMB come along, making triple what he's probably ever accumlated throughout the years, probably makes a person scournful.. With that said, he's paid his dues with countless classics, created a widely respected formula, and in the end, has nothing left to do but continue on that same path, or, finally make the cross over. And that is what he has decided to do at present time. This doesn't mean he is eternally damned to do one thing. He's a man, and man is contradicting and irrational. He could just as easy flip back to 95 mode and drop the MPC and pick up the SP full time. Whos to say? I don't honestly care one way or the other. It's just sad to see another LEGEND bowin out the game in a ungracefull way (imho). With the bowing out though, comes the oppurtunity for the torch pass, and im'a be standing right here waiting for the day the torch is passed my way..

There is no intentional way of how Hiphop is supposed to be heard...Throw away the rule books man...

I can't hate on how another man makes his bread, that's his deal...imo, Pete Rock ain't a sellout...He's getting what he rightfully deserves...

"put out hip-hop music the way I think it was intended to be heard" - I never implied there was a rule book.

Boogie: Peep my revised opening comment. I was being to anti-lytical initally.

Perhaps sell out is too strong of a word but, thiers something about that ad that makes me clinche my teeth everytime I see it. I get the, "Musta bit into a lemon face" when I see it - haha.

It just looks so out of place to see him with an MPC after watching him for 20+ yrs doing it on an SP. And I don't mean just reading about him using an SP, I mean seeing physically using it.

My rebuttles of all rebuttles is, can anyone here honestly say that they've heard a P.R. joint that came out after SS1 that is considered a classic? Or a joint that tops material from his earlier catalog?

Btw-

I've been trying to speak on broader terms throughout this debate. My focus isn't on Pete Rock soley. You can extend what i'm saying to a number of artists, and Hip-Hop cultures transformation as a whole.

Im'a go crawl back in my cave now, leave all you futuristic n*ggas alone - lol.

Bro, I think placing the blame on the gear is a bit much...It is possible that he just don't have it like he used to...It's not a knock on him, but he had some INCREDIBLE tracks back in the day..."Straighten It Out" is my all time PR favorite....It's like Gza trying to outdo Liquid Swords, ain't gonna happen....

^The first thing that poped in my head when I read that was that Mad TV skit, "Lowered expectations" (saying it all sappy like they do on the show) - haha.

Boogie: I hear what your saying G, but speaking from a position of experince I can tell you that equipment has A LOT to do with your sound. What gear you use, and how your material is engineered makes a big difference in sound. For instance, Group Homes first LP is a product of Vintage Pultec EQ's and Urei compressors. You don't hear many cuts today that have that vibe because audio developers design outboard compressors and EQ's with totally different specs. In fact, knock off Pultec shit like Tube-Tech company etc. purposely engineer they're equipment to have very similar charateristics to the original Pultec designs, but with more up to date electronic componetry and frequency boosts that give thier products a more "modern sound".

you cats all have good points. i just look at it like akai didnt come to pete, pete came to akai. He was the one who was using the mpc. They saw that and offred him loot to rep something that he is using at this time. If emu's sp12000 divison was still around then pete would be hawking them. its not like pete uses an mpc and then gets in a triton ad. So i cant hate on him. Im just sick of cats thinking that they are in this elite group becasue they are using 12bit. See like it or not, using 12 bit samplers IS becoming trendy. ALot of people are selling there 2000 to get a 60 becasue of primo, or cats are buying asrs becasue of kanye. Even the 303 is moving mad fast casue of madlib. Music production in general is becoming "trendy". Everyone makes beats anymore. Its just like dont go knocking cats casue this and that, just make beats and make good beats. Get in where u fit in. Ive worked with about 4 or 5 differnet samplers. the esi series, yahama, akai s2000 and mpc 2000xl, the boss 303, and the shit that keeps me making beats is using wavelab to sample, and my mpc to sequecne reason. Its just convience. To pete rock an mpc 2000 and an sp1200 is how he gets down. Lord finesse uses a 3k and an s5000. Madlib uses a 303 and 505 and mad other samplers. So dont go knocking cats for repping shit that they are using. Thats what the root of this arugment is about. Sorry for the rant. Just got outta work and kinda drunk, but thats where im at. PEACE.

Well lets not forget that the dude that helped design the MPC 2000 left emu when they didn't want to make an SP-1600. And Pete Rock has been using the 2000 for at least 8 years man, I heard about that a long time ago, but of course, I'm in NY and I know a lot of cats that bumped into him and would ask him what he started with and what he was using. BTW he started with an HR-16 and an S900 IIRC.

SO the 2000 isn't so much of a stretch for him, and come on, Akai is probably the only company that deserves that kind of backing, they should pay to put him on the front because who has helped sell more of them with free advertizing talking about what he uses? What, he should do an ad for creative/emu? They haven't made sampling drum machines since the SP-1200, and they went real plastic after all them founders left. Akai still makes Sampling drum machines, hell, the best ones out there, they still compete with their older ones because they made good shyt back then too. Who should akai pay to rep their products? Just Blaze? At least they are recognizing the pioneers and going to the source, look at who they are targeting, US, the heads who know who pete rock is, these FL cats don;t always know them. Akai puts out a quality product and they picked a guy with integrity in the beat making world to rep them. I gotta give them prop for that.

As far as trendy production equipment, the 2000 was made for DJ's, it was made to be trendy, accessibly to non professionals, you think we're the real heads? No way, the option approach of the 2000 is what made it accessible to the masses, 8 outs saved a lot of cost to akai. But hell, I hope 12 bit stays popular, gets really trendy, because I love hearing 12 bit music, and maybe some manufacturers will look into it seriously again, not many samplers offer bit reduction, a few just offer the "effect".
And hell, the more popular these machines get, the more people will take care of them and value them. I mean, we may look back at these days of gettin a 950 for about $100 and be like shocked when they fetch more. these things are cheap, and hell, people need good products cheap, you can argueably get a more pro old sampler for less than a consumer sampler these days. There are all sorts of trends, there are also things that are slept on, when people wake up, it can be a bit of a shock. I wish I could get an SP 1200 for 300, but I'm glad that people value them enough and enough people know about them that they will be taken care of, found broken and fixed because people value them and know what they can do as an instrument.

Shyt, Akai even included a 12 bit mode on the 4000, how cool is that?
