Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

1. I try to save all programs and sounds onto my mpc2000xl's floppy drive, and it gets stuck on one sound and just keeps asking for more floppies, when really its not saving anything on those. First it saves some sounds but then it does that crap! i hate it!

2. When i try to record my beats from the mpc onto cubase, i turn the volume all the way up on the mpc and it seems like its not even close to 0db...is there anything i can do about this? I turn it up from cubase and increase the gain, but it just doesnt sound right.

your samples are probably to big, you can save +/-8sec mono on a floppy (4sec stereo). you can save a pgm over multiple floppy's (like 20 samples on 3 floppy's) but you can not save 1 sample over diff floppy's, so you have to make sure the sample is less than 1.4MB. does it make any sense?

1.you need either an external hard drive, zip drive or multicard flash reader drive in order to save the amount of sound your gonna need to....i would suggest keeping anything you decide to go with external because you can still use the floppy drive to transfer single sounds back and forth from a computer for manipulation of that sound...its not meant to save a large number of sounds and programs...

2.there could be a few reasons for you not getting the levels you want when you try to record your stuff...you need to make sure when your sampling your sounds that you are getting really good levels: basically get it as loud and clear as you can without clipping. getting good samples is everything. other possiblities, you should run your mpc through some type of processor before you run it into your pc. whether it be some type of outboard recording gear or an amplifier. running low levels then pumping up the gain will just amplify your crappy sounds and make it worse. also make sure you use good cables and all that. if you dont have the outboard gear or an amp using a mixer should help make the levels better. but its prolly your samples....good luck

Did you look at the mixer in the XL, it could be set up to +12dB?

Hit Shift Mixer, go to your setups screen and curse over to where it has your DB set. It is defaulted at 0 try turnin it up like homey said.

try setting up your motu to match the input of the MPC.


Q: I panned a MIDI track but do not hear any difference on my 828mkII/896HD/Traveler/PCI-424 System

A: If you are monitoring a stereo input (eg. synthesizers, sound modules, samplers, POD, etc.) through Cuemix Console or Firewire Cuemix Console, be sure to hard pan the pan pots in the Console of those inputs. As the Cuemix Console outputs stereo, this will allow you to hear the full signal strength which will allow you to monitor a stereo image so that you may be able to perceive panning width. This also applies if you are sequencing and turn the pan pots, you will still need to adjust the pan in the Cuemix Console as you are monitoring an external sound source rather than an internal sound source.

output levels:

Audio line levels are referenced at +4 or -10 db. +4 is more common among high end studio equipment, -10 is found in high end studio equipment, and is also the standard for consumer electronics. The difference is the amount of gain. The idea is that the higher the signal gain, the lower the noise floor. Modern gear is much better quality than a few years ago, so noise is not as much a problem as it used to be. If you send a +4db signal into a -10 db input, you can overload the -10 db input with too much gain. This will cause distortion. The solution to this is to carefully monitor the signal. IIf the gain is too hot, you will need to attenuate the signal. Attenuation can be achieved with a simple volume control. Use a channel from a mixer, a pre amp, or even a compressor to do this. Likewise, a -10 db signal going into +4 db inputs will not have enough gain, and there could be noise introduced (the 2408 has -10 and +4 db outputs). If you must send a -10 db signal to a +4 db input, it's a good idea to add gain to the signal to make the levels match. Once again, a mixer channel or preamp will do the job.
