Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By djf2003 Mon May 16, 2005 8:59 pm
Hey,

Im havin a bit of a dilema, jus wanted to get some fellow mpc lovers opinions.....

i currently have a 2000xl (from drums/samples) which i use synced to SX, (where i do most of the aditional production). Ive been reading up on mpc3000's and they seem to be DOPE!

As i sold my old roland jv 1080 i now only have VSTi's for sounds - so i been thinkin about gettin a Yahama motif ES rack (i hear there sick).

But now im not sure if i should maybe sell my 2000xl, pay some extra cash, and get a MPC3000.

I dont have enough to get both the motif and a 3000. What do u all think i should do??????

Im torn!

also, how much do mpc3000's usually sell for (uk)? and are they hard to pick up 2nd hand (ive not had too much luck finding one).

Cheers,

DJF

just wondering what is so different between the 3000 and xl that you want to seel it? also ir you want sounds why would you get the 3000. keep the 2000xl and get a rack like the motif, fantom xr or triton rack.

From XL to 3000 is a downgrade not an upgrade...
You hear bout the Motif, read bout the 3K... better go a shop try any synth (Motif, XR...), make your own opinion, as the choice could depend on the genre you do...
The 3K had way less feat than the XL, once again, it depend on what you really need...

Cheers for the advice,

I been readin up on the mpc3000 forums and loads of ppl say they prefer the 'feel' and 'sound' of the 3000...

i dont know anyone who has one so i cant really judge.

I think i will go ahead and get a motif.....i have the rest of my life to experiment with other mpc's!

Cheers,

As an XL user you've got to read more bout your drum machine...
"feel" (i think groove) is the same as we share the same sequencer 96ppq, note tht the XL can hold more notes (MIDI) than the 3K...
AFA sound we share the same converters, 3K has +4db (like so) outputs, making peep say it sound louder, but yeah XL's +12db output, so who's louder???
There's too much hype around the 3K IMO.

i agree with you. Man i've had so many different types of equipment, and spent so much money to learn that its not only the equipment its how you use it.

3k got a banggin' sound(with grain), 2xl is similar to the original (no grain on the sampler)
It depends on where do you want to go, do you wanna a have a nasty oldskool crunchy sound or you want some cristal clear synthe type of beats.
I dont think it's a down grade, i would like to have a 3000.

"I dont think it's a down grade, i would like to have a 3000."

Follow me on tht: "i would like to have a '69 Ford Mustang, wit the nasty ol'skool engine... but i know bout the LAST 2K2 Mustang, andTHAT'S THE '69 UPGRADE."
Feel me?

The 3K is a BEAST but XL's the UPGRADE...

Id say get the motif.

Not dissing the 3k at all, but kilowax is right.

Some reasons youd want the 3k are: the 4 midi outs, The feel of owning a classic, because thats what dr.dre uses!

Yeah, id like a mpc3000. But A motif will do you more good in the long run. If anything, Go for the mpc4000 instead! but that really isnt even neccesary.

If you want some dirtier drums, get something like the motif rack and a akai s950. Sample your drums into the s950 for that nice sound........they cheap too.

The 3k beats the s**t out of the 2kxl. I just sold my 2kxl about a month ago. Don't get me wrong, the 2kxl is not a slouch by any means, but there is a definite difference in sound and swing. You will, however, lose some features that you may have gotten used to:

3000 has no track mute screen

3000 uses one drum program at a time and the 2kxl can use four

3000 has four midi outs; good if you have more than two sound modules

3000 does not have graphical sample editing

All in all, I felt that I could get by without those features, and in my opinion, I was right. Using the 3000 makes you work a little harder, but in turn, you also learn ALL about it's features/capabilities.

peace

"You will, however, lose some features that you may have gotten used to:"
>>Nah, not some but lot of features!
One thing 3K users don't talk bout is the EB16, who whould like to get a single Echo Send/Return as single FX?
XL can paly 4 prog but load way more!
The MIDI out argument is outdated as nowaday's module has Thru port...

Don't get me wrong, 3K is a beast wit hard case building and so, it's a great tool...
...but: too much hype around it make the second hand price blayzing too high (I bought a 4000 at the same price than a 3000LE), and yeah I feel XL is the 3K UPGRADE (by features)...

If you ever seen the Sracth Mag. with Dre on the cover, he has about 5-3000's set up for he drums. He might be used to working like that, but i know he wishes that the 3000 could play more programs at once. 1-2000xl = 4-3000 worth of playback. Sounds like an upgrade to me. Alot of people mention the sound the 3000 creates!!! Just for fun i would like for someone to go and listen to some hip-hop beats from various producers from this era and back in the days, and tell me if you can determine just by listening whether they used a 60, 3000, 2000xl, Asr-10, ASR-X, s950, triton, sp1200, etc. !!!! ITs not the machine its the MAN behind it, but i must say that features do help. Also don't forget that most of us these days use digital and analog equipment. When your nice 3000 drums go into your nice soundcard, or digital multitrack recorder, a lot will be lost in translation!!(but that's another topic). Plain and simple alot of it has to do with your style and how you work. I have an ASR-X, and what would take an hour to do on that beast what would take me half hour with the 2000xl. If you have a tight schedule like me( you know being married, have kids, work, etc.) then time is a factor!!! Anyway just my opinion and experience. I would really like a 4000, or an MV-8000, a lot more features(especially filters, 2000xl with more filters, parametric EQ would have been ill.)

One!
