One person Mentioned Pete Rock's signature "Laid Back Jeep sound". Think there are only one other Producer who mastered this style, Easy MO Bee. Has anyone else had success getting with this sound with there current set up, without a Sp 1200??

" Has anyone else had success getting with this sound with there current set up, without a Sp 1200??"

^Thats an oxymoron. Like big little people. You can't aquire the Jeep Beat sound without an SP-1200/MPC 60... Why? Because those are the machines that CREATED that sound.

Some other notable Jeep Beat producers are: Almost all of D.I.T.C., G-luv Da Arkitekt, Jason Mizzell (R.I.P), Beatminerz, Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed, Daddy long, I could name quite a few more, but you get the point.

Well since this is the MPC 60/3000 forum........

A lot of it is the approach you take, these machines make yuo work in a certain way due to the limited sample time, and you freak the sequencer and the limited things you can do with the sample more than someone with 32 megs, effects. There was a thread posted from somewhere else where a guy i talkin about how the 1200 makes you work and it was brilliant.

But as far as the sound goes, yeah, 12 bit is the sound, you can apply the techniques to get somewhat there, but there are plenty of people with Sp-1200's who don't get that sound, so there is more to it than the machine, but the machine is a big part of it.

If I coulda thought of someone using a 3000 to create jeep beats, I'da let you know. I didn't list any cause I don't know of any.

What cats I do know, that flip raw shit with 3000's, always have 12-bit codefendants.

I'm not aruging with you though Philly, i'm just kicking facts at you. If you analyze what i'm saying, it will answer your questions.. If you want some technical answers, ask some technical questions. I'm not being a prick, i'm just answering your questions the best I can based of what your giving me.

One thing I think were over looking is Filtering. a great analog Filter can really Help here as well as EQ. I think the MPC 3000 is very Bassy by nature and the Filter ok too. But a 24 Db Analog filter would really Help!

Yea an MPC 3000 + (insert classic 12-bit sampler/filter) could definately produce some rawness.

Prince Paul, Spinna, and P.U.T.S have got some pretty authentic sounding hip-hop shit.. and they all use the 3000. All of them have Sp's, 950's, too. Which validates my previous remarks.

Also, the MPC 3000 is in the same category as the Akai S1000/1100/3000XL racks. They're 16 bit samplers, but they came out in 94, or in the S1000/S1100's case, pre 94. Those samplers are mad punchy, with a lota clearity. Those would be the only 16-bit samplers (Other then the EPS16/ASR10) that could give you that authentic jeep beat vibe imo.

Also remember, the SP-1200 while it has filters, they are fixed and very limited, so you don't have much control if any at all on some of them. Like the 60, no filters, so no filter control, you have outputs for certain sounds and you can assign sounds to them, but it probably becomes pretty standard as far as what goes where.

Also, Lo Pass, I wonder if you could get into how the SP works as far as controlling other gear, I've read the manual, and it doesn't help, just wonder how midi control of say a 960 or whatever is handled, like can you multi pitch? and does controlling external gear make you lose any of the SP's functions like channel assignments.

You cna do it here, or in a new post, or in a PM if you don;t want it all out in the open.

Maybe some one can add to post about talking there favorite Filter frequencies for good Bass!

Filtering depends on the source material, I could list a freq but if what you are filtering doesn't have any sound below that then you'll get nothing.

My hint, use the 950, use a bit of resonance, and lower the freq until you hear the sweet spot peak.

Know resonance on the s950 filter ,so i guess I'll fav to use an outboard anaog filter.

No Resonance???

Damn and the 3k only has like 15 levels of res right? I was never impressed with the 3k filter, but it beats nothing, try it on that, it should work, but I like a finer resonance control, at least 1-100.

damn son, get that analog.
