Midi Keyboard or MPD16

i want to be able to assign different one shot samples to each key on my midi keyboard, in essence create a drum kit on a midi keyboard or even assign different chopped part of a samle to each individual key, is this possible or do i need a Mpd16?

you'll need a sampler to do that, with a sampler either one will work.

Sounds like your in the market to purchase Reason 3.0 (Music Production Software / Sampler) and a M-Audio "Trigger Finger"

I agree with cashstill, the trigger finger has alot more features than the mpd16 but you should get a midi keyboard. Playing the pads on a real mpc and software are 2 completly different things... MPC doesnt have an infinite amount of synth modules and patches like software does. When you play a rhodes or grand piano its going to be alot more inspiring and natural to play with a keyboard rather than pads. Later if you still want pads just get a real mpc.

I just use it to pick out sounds in Reason any way, i actually play / trigger the sounds for Sequencing on the Motif 7 (Sequence with MPC 2000XL)

I don't need no $499 midi controller, somebody break it down if i'm missing something

Yeah cash, that keystation 88 is a total waste of dough. The radium seems like a nice midi controller and the other option would be try to find a used keyboard with decent sounds for a few hundred bucks to control your software that way if this guy gets an mpc he can midi those patches to the mpc sequencer.

i tried out tha trigger finger and honestly i don like ish with too much features i like to be limited in a way ( i guess thats why im styll F*ckin with FL) but newayz when i approach a beat i wanna think about tha beat not what all these knobs do

actually forget what i jus said i think imma go wit tha microkorg, at least that way i can get a sound module nd not hav to worry about keys nd since i aint really keyboard player tha small keys don bother me, thanks for tha responses

But yo, I invested in both pads and keys. (akai mpd16 and a evolution 49 key controller w/ 12 rotary knobs). For triggering drums and one shot sounds i prefer the pads, but when it comes out to playing out basslines, keys are where its at for me.

Make sure you have a soundcard/interface that is high quality, so that you can achieve really low latency. ( have about 1ms-2ms) of latency in most programs, which you cant detect, period.

But word, midi controllers with software are where its at. hands on feel. no mouse clicking necessary.

In addition to software, i also use my keys and pads to trigger other gear, like my sp-12 turbo. youll find a lot of uses for controllers as you dive into more equipment like rack modules, etc.
