no sound from headphones

Hey what's up all. I just purchased a mpc4000 with 1.71 os so its fresh out of the box. Amongst all the talent this web site has drawn, is there anybody who would be able to me why no sound comes from my headphones? I have the phone level at half, same with master volume and recording. Is this usual for a new mpc to have no headphone sound right out the box? Headphones are fine (tried them on alternate sources)
