I sampled a kick drum from an old break and I try to give it a more hard hitting bass sound, but when I try to do that, there is too much air on the sample. I have the same problem with the snare too.

You could also layer it over itself and make one of them filtered at like 20, then boost its volume

What are you doing to give it a more hard hitting sound? I could help with your question better if I knew that.

Why not let the music lead you?

Is the air a bad sound to have or could it provide some atmosphere for the rest of the beat?

Sample some more air and let it sit by itself in the empty spaces, underneath the other sounds.

A lot of times my music leads me, my samples find me. I'm just the channel for this. Sorry not trying to get all new-agey on you but sometimes rolling with the punches can land you in a better place.

Unless,

it's wack to you and you can't feel it, in which case lose the air.

Maybe one of these other guys can help.

I've EQ'd the drums, and I might copy the same sounds, filter them, and then layer them.

Does the sampled kick actually have any hard hitting bass once it is isolated from the rest of the original record? You might be trying to find something in it that it doesn't have. I find a lot of old breaks really have all their punch in the snares or the bass, or maybe in the pattern the kick is playing, but if you chop it into individual sounds the kick is actually quite weak.

Thats how I do it. Also, try setting the decay at START and use a higher decay setting (in the PROG then PARAM screen) to cut off the end of the sample, cause in a kick, thats where the air sound usually is. Hope this helps.

Peace1

BTW, you might wanna set each layer to a different decay, too
