"You Know My Steez" - kickdrum

does anyone know where the kick from GangStarr´s "You Know My Steez" came from? On Masters Of Illusion´s "BayBronxBridge", there is a break where "Kurt is on the MP" and he uses the same kickdrumsound. to me it sounds quite "oldschool", but i don´t know on which track(s) from way back in the days i´ve heard it, too. do you know it? was/is that sound special to any equipment?

dont know where it's orinally from but it was used many years earlier by Showbiz & A.G on an intro before a song called 'Hold ya head'...on the Run Away Slave LP...

I just managed to get a Rip of that ALBUM.....one of my all time faves but just could never get hold of it!!!!

Lol I was thinking bout this kick drum a few days ago...

It reminds me of a distorted kick from an old park jam tape or bootleg.

Yeah...that kick n Snare are pretty hard hittin'.

The effect can be simulated with any kit tho'....just turn the gain up to HI on the rear of the MPC 60 & le voila!!!! DISTORTION Central!!!!

the whole song is recorded too loud so thats why it's distorted.

Wow...I remember that.....gosh...I LOOVE hip hop history & the way certain producers both present & past use old samples from songs of yesteryear...Premo & so many others have kept these songs alive.....

"Flash is on the Beatbox"

This was a Vox percussion synth. I don't know the actual name of the model but it was like a little monosynth keyboard but each key played a different percussion sound. It didn't have any form of sequencer though so it could only be played manually.

On the "Official Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash" album on Strut Records from a few years ago (not the Sugarhill single from the early 80's) Flash talks about using this beatbox in one of the little interview sections.
