something i dont understand about crate digging

theres sumthing i dont get about when yall go to buy records (amungst other things) how do you decide on the record you going to buy? As far as im aware you cant listen to the record before you buy (in the shitty shops i go to you cant anyway) so how do you decide? Is it by the cover of the record or is there just some thing im not gettin?

It helps if you can find a shop where you can listen. If they don't have a turntable you can bring a portable one (although you risk looking like a fool).
Once you get an idea of the type of records you like, you can try and look for other things on the same labels or from the same year.
Or if you really like that one bassline on an lp, check the sleeve who played the bass and use google to find other bands he played in.

The pricetag is also a good indication. If it's old, but above $10, it's probably been sampled a thousand times already
I always buy from the dollar bin, there's a sample on every record, you just need to find it.

HaHa! I usually go by the covers and what musicians are on the record. If its a foriegn, I just buy it cause those always have a sample on them.

chances are if the cover looks dope, the record will be dope.... this not always the case but a general rule..... stick to the dollar bin at first, then if you get a sh|tty record you only lost a dollar..... after you have been at it a while you learn to recognize a lot just by looking at the cover, artists, label, ect.

Simcity is right. Your gut lets you know.

Ever pick up a really wack looking record but for some reason you can't put it down, you read the back for some reason to hold on to it, but even if you don't find anything, you still can't just put it back? That's the force.

Nah, you wont look like a fool. If anything you'll find samples on records you'd never think there were samples on. The only problem i have with taking my portable is old people always bug me about it. I'll have my headphones on and they'll walk by and just stop and stare and wait for me to look up so they can bug the shit out of me to ask me where I got it.

thanks fellas good advice, problem is though in the UK i do nt kno wof any shops like that. Weve got the main shops like HMV and them but they dont have dolla bin (pound bins) we just have a few shitty records. If there is anyone in the UK could you let m know on some good records shops

OK Fosssie....first off...where in the UK are you?

If like me, you in or any where NEAR london....then the 1st port of call would be Music & Video exchange in the World famous Notting Hill gate!!!

I have gotten about 70-80% of all the Vinyl i own from there & pickedd up some GEMS. I got Lou Donaldsons Mr-Shing-A-Ling LP for a pittance....Beautiful condition too.

they also have VAST selections of Soundtracks....listed by film title & composer.

I often go by a particular artist, Label or year! Mostly in the 70's coz thats my fave decade for music of yester year!!!

But bottom line...if the spidey sense aint tinglin'...leave the money in your pocket.

yo humblestar1 ya makin me feel loved due, lol aaanyway im in Liverpool (but i aint a trackie wearin scally lol) im sure there must be some shops around. Mayve i should try charity shops like Oxfam or shit like mpc4000xl said, You ever try any of these shops.

As far as drums/breaks go....it's not a bad idea to learn the names of some good drummers, you can always see that on the back of the cover.
Definately go by year too.
There are some insane drums on records with dumb looking covers, so going by the cover doesn't always work.

Just try to learn some titles from friends, or guys in here, or on the web...and then just keep an eye out for them when you're shopping.

Dollar/Pound bins do exist in UK. Last time I was in London I bought a Kurtis Blow record for .50p in a thrift store bin, tucked behind some old clothes.
I got some other records for cheap at some record store near The Church Studios (on Muswell Hill / Crouch End - can't remember)
