VSTs?

what are they?

They are little software programs that can be used inside a computer to replace some hardware.
In the old days we had a lot of hardware in the studio; compressors, limiters, outboard eq's, reverbs, chorus, ...
They were all hooked up to a mixer or a patchbay. Now a lot of people use software sequencers with a build in mixer, and vst's are a way to patch in some of those effects.
So instead of spending $2000 on a compressor, you can now buy a vst that does the same for 1/10 of the price if you're recording in your computer.
A lot of vst's are free too, so if you have software on your computer that supports vst you should try some out.

VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology, the term "VST's" usualy refers to software instruments/samplers or fx plug ins

i just downloaded audacity last night and it seems to be pretty cool. the effects in audacity is its VSTs? i think it said i could d/l additional effects, not sure if its free though. i saw a post about chainer and VSTs, not sure what it is exactly but i take from the name that its a way to "chain" the effects to each other? i guess this is to get around only having 2 effects pn the 1k. i do a little research to see what i can find but any additional info from you guys would be appreciated.

VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology
A VST is an Effect
A VSTi is an Instrument (softsampler, softsynth)

Those are plugins. VST is invented by Steinberg (The Cubase & Nuendo company)

It works the same as hardware.
You have a virtual mixer in, lets say, Cubase. And you have a virtual vst plugin, lets say an EQ. You then insert that plugin on a track in Cubase. You can make virtual busses too. Just like you would do on a real hardware Mackie mixing desk.

Vst´s are allways dll´s (Dynamic Link Library) wich goes into your vstplugin folder. You can build them yourself if you know how. Look for Synthedit in Google.
