Setting Up A Basic DJ Mixer

I Know Its A Simple/Stupid Question, And I've Been Using The Simple/Stupid Search Button For The Last 15 Minutes And Cant Find My Answer

I just got a 2 channel mixer, and wanted to quickly test to see if it worked.

So I grabbed my MP3 player and one of those chords with the white and red on one end and the single on the other.

I plugged the single side to my mp3 player, and the white/red in the Line 1 ports in the back of my mixer accordingly. I turned on my mixer and made sure all the knobs and shit were set properly, and I see the beat from the monitering lights and everything. I put some headphones in the PHONES spot to hear the music, but I cant hear anything. Ive been trying different things for a while and can't seem to hear anything, even though the mixer clearly shows the rhythm and everything with the blinking monitering lights.

What am I doing wrong?!!

1) make sure the phno/line switch is set to line, and make sure you plugged it into line on the back.

2) check the volume on the mp3 player.

3) check the headphone volume on the dj mixer, you might have it turned off.

4) check to make sure you have the crossfader set to the same side you have the mp3 player plugged in. Also make sure the hamster switch is not engaged.

5) make sure the upfader for that particular channel is also up, and not hamstered. also make sure you have enough gain on that channel.

6) test out the headphones on something else, a stereo or something, to make sure they work.

I tried all the steps, nothing works. I had the time now to hook it up to my turntable as well (using phono instead of line) and everything seems to indicate that it is hooked up correctly (via the lights blinking) however I can't hear anything. And I tested the headphones on a stereo as well, they work fine.

Anybody else?

This shoultn't really matter if you've tried all different settings/levels etc, but have you got the headphone output set to master or cue ?
What mixer is it ? Did you buy it used ?

^I've Tried every single combination of every single variable LOL

It's an Audio Technica AM150, I bought it used on Ebay (I know) but the guy seems to have a good reputation. He claims it works perfectly.

The headphone outputs could be broken. Try using the main outs to a stereo. Hope this helps.

Make sure the cue (monitor switch) is set to master, that could be your problem

If I were you I'd get back to the seller and see what he says. Then nail the lady's private parts if it turns out the mixer doesn't quite work as perfectly as he claimed. It only $26, but I'd still do it.
