ha no votes for high, everybody knows that's just trouble!!
unless you just have a mic or are using headphones as a mic, even then mid will probably cover ya.
yeah fobedafied, I mess a bit with input levels on each sample, it's real easy to just sample, play it back and discard and try a different setting, I think I'll try low next time and see what differences I can detect, there should be some differences, perhaps in punch.
Goldenechos, that's a good idea, using the gain from another source to bring it up. Someone was saying to use a direct box on the input, I have one but haven't tried it yet.
it's a shame the 60 doesn't have a gain or normalization for samples after sampling. It would be great to sample really low and then normalize, it would be really gritty then, you'd just have to boost the output like crazy to do it.

Real question would be what for both these settings:
switch--HI-MID-LOW
software--Record Level
What I'm getting at is the combination is your level not just the switch.
On the 60 the MID definitely seems to be the functional settting, but what is your setting for the Record Level?
Especially Andreas since he uses the LOW setting.
goldenechos, pretty much hit the nail,
since we talking about creating sound textures the gain staging doesn't have to be accurate in the true since so decreasing the signal feed to the 60 and increasing the input works as does increasing the feed and reducing the input.
Some other samplers have the same type double control
scenario;
The SP
variable--knob
software--00db-20db-40db
ASR key variable knob plus mic/line switch
(ASR rack just variable knob)
switch--HI-MID-LOW
software--Record Level

Yeah but the rec level is gonna vary, I usually have mine at around 60, sometimes 85/90 when I want it to distort, sometimes lower, it depends on the sample really.

In my opinion, that is one of the coolest things about the 60; the different color you can get with the almost endless array of Switch, Software and Source gain levels... everything from Pretty Clean to just Stoopid, Busted Up, Lo-Fi trash. No plug-in comes close.

Exactly, it really has a wide palate because of that, that's why I'm asking, I'm gonna try the gain switch at low next time and just boost the rec level, then try boosting at the board too, if anyone has opinions about what character these bring out in the sample I'd like to hear them.

In my opinion, the MPC60's gain stage is lo-fi compared to most decent consoles; even the Mackies that so many of us use (which are clean and have loads of head room compared to the 60's input gain stage).
For a clean sample, I get the gain from my board and set switch at low and the software at 50 or so. These clean samples are a bit quieter than the bombastic, distorto drums people associate with 12bit machines, but in my opinion they are very useful and a nice contrast to the gritty sounds.

dont you guys use the level meter when sampling? so it sounds dirtier if i set it at mid and turn down the record knob? i should try sampling with it on high

High is crazy, mad distortion, but you should try it...once
yes I use the meter, but There is some interesting things to be had by sampling at different levels.
I think the idea of using different gain devices is a window to really getting to know the 60.
Anyone know the science of what using a DI Box would improve in smapling, if anything?

I like to get a little distortion on my kicks sometimes, just for that raw punch. As long as it doesn't have a lot of decay on the kick it can turn a soft thud into a crunchy pow.

Yeah I sometimes sample the same kick at different stages of overdrive. Love that sine to square effect.

holy sh!t
I can't touch mid and hi forget about it......mine is always set to lo and hasn't moved since i got the 60 last year......although there was that time i slipped and thought it was an output gain *accidentally hit the switch and nearly blew my monitors out....cus the signal coming through was crazy distorted......do yall kats just sample straight from a turntable or some shit??? I find that if you're a dj and have a mixer you can just boost the gain at the source rather than on the input of the 60 and results are more than adequate..............P E a C E!

Drum,
I run off several sources but typically use the tables plug into either my Vestex, Mofx or Filter Factory and -MID- is the setting.
The turntable pre on the Electrix stuff is pretty hot.
I still use -MID- when I go from my Moog, JV, or from another sampler.
El,
I use DI/pre-amps on the signal to track and sometimes to sample.
Not the low price ones for gain but the ones that give you character
and/or EQ curves.
I use
2 of these
a pair of these
1 of these
Makes all the difference in the world for the sound you end up with.

My man is on fire like the Ohio Players
Throw yo' hands in the air, keep 'em there if you with me
