im trying to find out how to be able to mess with all the audio effects for my vocals when the shit is playing because i hate that little 5 sec audition bullshit i dont really get to hear how it's really going to sound like that is this possible if so help a brotha out please

There are two ways to do this. You can apply fx in Sonar in either the console view or the track view window. In the console view window right click on the black area below the track name at the top of the channel strip. Select audio effects>select the effect you want. The window for the effect you selected should pop up, hit play on the transport bar, tweak away.

The other way to do this is more common and more useful for cpu efficiency. Instead of inserting the effect on the actual track you can insert the effect on an auxilary track. Your session should default with 2 aux tracks, unless you changed the default setting. Insert the effect on the first aux track the same as before, right click on the black area under where it says aux1>select the effect you want>on the channel with your vocal click on the little blue button next to where it says "1 post">adjust the slider above that for the amount of effect you want. This comes in handy when you have more then one track that you want to add the same kind of effect to.

I've given you the short gutter version of how to do this but there's a news group in outlook express dedicated to Sonar so for future referance I'd check it out as this is an MPC forum. Good luck!

why does my song keep dropping out every time i try to apply the fx to the track? and i also noticed that when the mc does a lot of takes my computer starts to slow down anyway to get around this

yo if possible could you give me a couple techniques with these effects on vocals mostly because you just showed me that ive been sittin on a gold mine for months now and i sittin around talkin about waiting till i get some more money so i can buy me a compressor like a hhb radius or some thing i dont need it now shit, but anyway can you let me know whats up with these effects which make the vocals sound official thanks

Try raising or lowering your buffer settings in the options panel. Options>audio>advanced. Also try turning off all the programs running in the background, start>run>type msconfig>click on the start up tab>uncheck all the boxes. Disable all network devices. Right click My Computer>performance>settings>check adjust for best performance>click on the advanced tab>check background services and system cache. These are just a few optimizations that will make Sonar run faster. All of this is pointless if your pc is out of date. What processor/mb are you using?

The rest of my post got cut off for some reason. Anyway, how much ram do have installed? As ar as how to apply fx to your vocals, it depends on what kind of vocals. Above all else the most important thing is to track the vocal right in the first place. If the vocal was recorded sh*tty to begin with then it don't mater what you do to it after, garbage in/garbage out! I wouldn't forget about getting outboard gear if I was you, especially if you track a lot of vocals. A good mic pre will really make a vocal sound great if used correctly.

my badd i forgot to ask you what type of gea just some suggestions right now i have an mpc2000xl and 61-key tritonand my computer i also have a akg c-3000 and a behringer mixer 1002 but for some reason i dont know what the hell im doing with the mike because when i try to do vocals with the condendser mic it still come out shitty i dont i know it has something to do with the levels on the mixer i dont know what i do is record my beats into soundforge then import them into sonar xl then lay the vocals over the track in sonar i also like using soundforge better then my mpc for samling,etc it seems easier then i put the sample in the mpc editor after it's done,put it on a zip and throw it in my mpc and you know the rest now that youve heard my process do you have any shortcuts that i dont know about and also give some suggestions on the further purchases i should make about getting those vocals to sound tight thanks dogg for your help much appreciated

Right click My Computer>Properties>Advanced>Performance settings.

I notice you didn't mention a soundcard, if your using the stock soundcard that came with your computer then you definitely need to upgrade. Eventually you're going to need to upgrade your pc also. On the low end the Audiophile 24/96(150.00) is a good choice. If you got money to spend I'd reccommend a MOTU 828II fire wire interface(800.00) or the new Tascam FW884(1300.00). Both of these would allow you to get rid of that behringer mixer and go digital all the way.

As far a your recording technique of recording everything into SF and then importing into Sonar, I'd say you're doing it the hard way, just record directly into Sonar. If you get a new audio/midi interface you will be able to sync up all your gear which will make tracking much easier. You will be able to track each individual track from your MPC and Triton and mix it in Sonar, the difference in sound will be evident once you learn how to use all of Sonar's tools.

As far as sampling in SF instead of directly into the MPC, whatever works best for you is the best way to do it, I sample the same way you do most of the time. You'll notice a difference in the quality of your samples when you upgrade your soundcard.

When it comes to outboard gear I'd recommend you get a good mic pre. I good mic pre is gonna run you from 500.00 to 2500.00 bucks, just remember that when it comes to recording equipment you usually get what you pay for so get the best you can afford. On the low end I'd recommend the Grace Design Model 101(600.0) or the Summit Audio 2BA-221(600.00), if you can, get two of them and you can run all of your gear through them and really make your recordings sound great. Don't take my word on what gear to buy though, do some research on this stuff and see what looks good to you. Check out some of the recording magazines, they always have great tutorials and reviews of gear.
