i do every sound on a seperate track then when im happy with it i merge it into one "drums" "loop" "keys" whatever, the main elements i dont like a ton of tracks otherwise it just gets too messy when i come back to it later..

I put everything on separate tracks:

Track 1 -> Sample or melody
Track 2 -> Hatz, cymbals, etc
Track 3 -> Snares (layered/stacked)
Track 4 -> Weird shyt, sounds, custom stuff I've created myself
Tracks 5 - 8 are left blank, in case I wanna add shyt later
Tracks 9 - 12 -> DRUMZ DRUMZ DRUMZ an mo DRUMZ (layered/stacked)

Then I run my drumz, snares, and the sample/melody through the good 'ol Avalon 737, then cut them to ProTools

peace

Djdynasty,

Sometimes I name them but usually I just solo each one and I know what's there, then you know more or less what's at each number.

I love song mode ;)

Well, I guess I'm just odd.
I work from templates

On MPC-2000xl
Trk1--MPC1 -If I need to seq some 2kxl drums
Trk2--MPC2 -If I need to seq some 2kxl perc
Trk3 - 10--ASR-10 channels 1 - 8 (MIDI A)
Trk11 - 16 -- VP channels 1 - 6 (MIDI B)
Trk17 - 24 -- JV channels 1-7 and 11 (MIDI B)
Trk25 -- Emax
Trk26 -- SP-1200 (no sequencing just whether or not SP was used and what pattern it was, more for recall than anything else)
Trk27 -- MPC-60 (no sequencing just whether or not 60 was used and what .aps/.all it was, more for recall than anything else)
Trk28--MPC3 -If I need to seq some 2kxl drums
Trk29--MPC4 -If I need to seq some 2kxl drums
Trk30 - 99 -- As needed for other gear
Feed MIDI Clock to MPC60 and SP
On the 60
Trk1--total sketch drum track
Trk2 - 99 -- any elements of the drum structure that need to be built up or broken down
On SP
PD1-Kick that I will use the most
PD2-Snare I will use the most
PD3-Hat I will use the most
PD4-Crash, second Hat, or any cymbal shacker etc that will have any real syncopation with the first Hat
PD5-Kick that is associated to kick on PD1
PD6-Snare that is associated to PD2
PD7/PD8-any main portion beat enhancements
NEXT BANK
PD1-PD4- Kicks for transitions/ change ups etc
PD5-PD8- Snares for transitions/ change ups etc
NEXT BANK
PD1-PD4-Congas
PD5-PD8- Toms
NEXT BANK
Anything leftover sample time allows

another reason I don't place drums on seperate tracks is because it's too difficult to organize swing times and note shifts. It takes far too long and is quite tedious. For the time it takes you guys to copy the "hat" track, the "Snare" track, the "Kick" track.....i've already copied a full drum sequence 3x and modified the pattern. You know what else though....it really depends on the type of music you're creating.....I know El don't make hiphop and so I can see his reasons for doing things the way he does.....I used to work in the same manner as he's the one who showed me a lot of the features on the mpc-60.....it's really just a matter of preference....do what works best for you like all other things.

Nope ...

I answered a similar question from ELMACACO once in another topic.

This one in fact:

Peace.

Rohan that's cool to know.
I just like different things about different sequencers so I use certain ones for certain things and make them act as one.

The fact that two MPC machines or an MPC and ASQ can link up and go the distance without too much hassle is a big deal when you need a larger track count ... or need to make major sequence changes on the fly that would other wise interrupt a single machine sequencing session.

The extra MIDI ports come in handy too when driving certain old machines that would other wise cack them selves if certain shared midi data was not able to be redirected or fitered out in an exclusive port access scenario... ( IE: Certain old Publison and early Casio stuff ).

ha ha, Rohan that was great "STUFF>STUFF>STUFF>"

yeah Drum, I can see how having the drum on one track i useful, but it i o easy to keep sh;t separate. I usually have my kick and snare on one track, I don;t bother dividing them most of the time, sometimes I'l hve a hihat on their too, but Ilike to mess with the hihat volume on different sequences, and having it on a separate track makes it easy to use the Velocity per track feature. with them all on the same track you can change the velocity but you need to do the process and hit the right pad etc. The indiouts can solve it, but it' just another level of control if you need it.

Sometimes my drums are 15 tracks!

I lay down a part, and then just hit oft button 4 while still in overdub, then keep adding sh;t, every time I pause after a new part I go to a new track.

One question.

Thanks

Yes

yup, copy the track then erase the snare from one and the kick from the other.

Or you could Copy the Snare to a new track, copy the Kick to a new track and mute the original.
Leaves you with the original track to fall back on.

Seems either method is somewhat obvious.
