Pete Rock a 16-bit sell out.....

Pete didn't sell out he just changed.
He changed a lot of things
-started with S-950 went to S-1000 then to S-3000
-started with SP-1200 did some of the PeteStrumentals with MPC-3000 then went to MPC-2000xl
-started with AKAI MG multi-track went to 2" now PT
-started out creating a sound that was new now caught trying to decide what to keep about his old style while trying to develope a new style

Any one of these by itself wouldn't be that bad but when you stack them all together the sound definitely changes dramatically.
When you heard first "Let It All Hang Out" or "Can't Stop The Prophet" remix that sh*t was hot but now you know Pete's sound so it's almost like Pete comes off as someone trying to sound like Pete Rock.
Pete understands now that he will have to branch out more to get to the next.
The 2kxl things puts him in the eyes of the new wannabe producers so they will pay attention to what he has done as well as what he is doing.
EMU doesn't exist anymore so endorsing the SP doesn't get him any chips.
Working with ED OG was to show that I can still do work in hopes of getting his phone ringing again.
While Pete's last 4 projects aren't my favorite Pete Rock LP's I can still deal with them for what they are and hope the next one gets him back into people's headz.

All i gotta say is Soul Survivor 1 - done on the sp1200 and s950....studio musicians and 2" reels.....no comparison...that album's production was flawless....and that was only 1997/98.

I still get teary eyed when I watch the Pete Rockumentary --- 40 minutes of pure joyful hiphop bliss.

pete on the sp was like miles on the trumpet. man that cat is the reason why i make beats to this day. Pete on xl aint that good i must admit too much sample time made him lazy but he's still dope. Anyway drumatic im feeling your beats man some nice stuff esp drumz. yes yes - please post that tape up- don't get me wrong......I have a huge amount of respect for PR - but i'm telling you all......just sit and stare at the photos on Main Ingredient. Pete and CL chillin' in the basement.....akai mg1214, s950, sp1200.....congas, a fender piano....it's beautiful.....I wanna see Pete continue to rock the SP and leave that 2000xl alone for a while....like everything else....if ain't broke don't fix it!

i cant remember where... but i remember reading some chit like flash and them didnt even want to record much less release "THE MESSAGE"... it was total label influence that made them do it, and it turned out to be their big hit... maybe ill try to find it, i know it sounds kinda crazy...

ok for any cats wishing to get that pete rock beat tape off me i'll have to do a you send it.. Thats unless you know of a server i can temporarily stream it from for cats to download its about 30mb and the tracks are not split its about 20min long but has about 10-15 beats on there trust me this tape is dope!!

I gotta hear that. I saw the man yesterdya ad they asked hi about gear, firt thing he said was SP-1200, I think he might use the Xl instead of the 950 now, he called the XL hi new toy and that he's learning new things about it everyday. I could feel him on that, like once you know all the features of a piece of gear, you can use it and freak it, but learning a new piece of gear can inpire you just seeing what' possible.

Marley marl also said about how pete has a secret technique to get more sampletime in the SP-1200, and Evil D said he think he may have bit it because pete taugt him to use it over the phone and it may have led him right to it.

Any SP head know what it is? it can't be speeding up the sample, itreally sounds like they're talking about omething in the machine, some technique, cuz everybody knows the 45 /78 trick

Correct me if Im wrong, but this is the same thing as tuning down the sample to it´s normal pitch via the slider and (in the SP12T) at least it is something like: Setup->23->LO?
The lowest pitch available this way on the SP12 is the same as my Vestax PDX 2000 maximum pitch on 45.

If it´s something else than that tune range thing.... Oh Shit!!!

It's all hype. Everyone needs to stop spreading that rumor. I've listen to every PR beat he's basically put out from 1990-1998. Thier isn't one beat I can't duplicate to a T with the SP + S950. Sorry to tell you all this.

The nail in the coffin is my man who runs Emulatorarchive.com. I spoke with him in detail a few years back about all this. He told me it's not possible to add a 3.5" drive or more ram because the OS won't recognize any of it. He traveled all the way to Japan and searched hi and low for the OS schematics.. to no avail. Thier will never be mods for the SP unless that OS schematics pop up at some point.

Like he adds on his site, he did possess a custom OS 8.3 from an SP Phil Collins owned. I'm assuming that Phil had this done while the OS schematics were still avaliable.

Hey Lo,
I think the problem is that until a person understands how to sample at 45 on the SP without getting that Ring Mod pitch sound they wont understand the true aspects of the SP.
Throw the S-950 into the scenario and it's like d*mn.
Pete using an MPC is a good thing.
He slowing coming back up in visibility so it could make Akai make some improvements.
