Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

By Bashir Sat Jun 04, 2005 5:42 pm
After doing numerous experiments and burning about 50 wasted CD's this is what I have discoverd.

When working with recycle after chopping a loop and exporting it as an AKP file if you look in the folder you export it to it gives each file the name that you come up with as the root and then numbers them "root" 001, root 002 etc. there is a space between the root name and the 3digit suffix.

Ok when you import the AKP file into MPC editor it truncates the name depending upon how many characters and adds this symbol (~) followed by usually the number 1, so when you export your program from the mpc editor your file looks like this "root01~1, root01~1 etc. Well I have discoverd that the MPC2000xl at least my MPC2000xl has a problem with this (~) symbol and will not load the files when the MPC program searches for the waves. It will just ask you to skip. Even if I tell recycle to give the file a name like 1, MPC editor still adds the ~1

What's happening is the MPC is looking for files with the "~1" in the file name when you load the program, but if you look at the individual waves in the folder on the MPC they don't have the ~1 suffix, they have the original names given when the AKP file was created in Recycle. Which explains why I can load the sounds individually... The waves are there but the program created by the MPC editor is actually looking for different wave file names then the ones it exported. It's looking for the files with ~1 suffix.

When I went in the folder with the wave files and renamed them something simple like 3 characters with no spaces or symbols and then loaded each wave onto a pad in MPC editor (defeating the purpose of having an APK file to autoload them) and then export that as a program and burn it to a CD then it loads fine in my MPC

When importing AKP files MPC editor automatically adds "~1" to the files names that show up on the pad, but it exports the waves under the orinal names. MPC3000, is there anyway to keep MPC editor from adding the ~1 to all the files?

I have found a work around but it kind of defeats the purpose of using the MPC editor, because I still have to go in and assign each sound to a pad and I could do that just as fast by just pulling the waves into the MPC and assigning them to pads......

Thanks again to everyone for your help with this issue, I really do appreciate it.

also just found this out. The wave files being exported from MPC editor into a folder do have the ~1 suffix and when you try to load that program it looks for the ~ symbol.... well upon further research the wave files that show up on the MPC have a suffix but it has changed the ~ symbol to the _ symbol. When I take that same disc and pull it back up in the computer you see the ~symbol again. So the program is looking for the ~ symbol on the mpc, but the MPC reads the files with the ~ symbol converted to the _ symbol......

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, really confused now.

Yo Bashir that's what I was talking about when I asked you were the names being trunacated.
That's what the "~" symbol means, that the name has been trunacated.
That goes back to the ISO Level 1 and Level 2 settings for burning CD in Nero.
Since the ZIP is actually copy like a HD it's using a different scenario.
Solutions would be

-to go in and distinctly re-name your .wav's prior to the MPCeditor dealing with them so that the chops have simple short names.
You don't really have to deal with the .apk file if you use the auto assign.
Then inside of NERO check to see which works best for you for the
File/Directory name length Level 1 or Level 2
or
-get a SCSI HD for the MPC and use the ZIP drive like a TAXI to transfer from the computer to the MPC, then save the .pgm file and samples to the SCSI HD.

If you use a HD you can then just burn a image of the HD onto a CDR.

Ok, I didn't know that's what the ~ symbol meant. Two questions......

1. how does the auto assign work?

2. I have a SCSI HD for the MPC and I could do the Zip thing, but I want to Burn like 2 CD's with all the programs on it and do the same thing as far as TAXING to the HD. But Sh!t I could have done that 3 times by now with a Zip with as many CD's as I have ruined. But I just wanted to figure this out cause I know it has to work with a CD. The question is what do you mean by burn an image of the HD to a CD? Are you talking about the SCSI HD? and how do you go about burning an image of a HD. I have burned CD images to a HD before... is it the same thing?

Oh I do have a third question, which level are you using in Nero. I thought you was always supposed to use level one. what about the mode....Which mode do you use?

1. Auto-assign takes 64 .wav and automatically assigns them to the 64 MPC pads (16x4).
You then export the .wav's and pgm.
So if you had 64 chopped samples in a folder the MPCeditor would automatically assign them to the 64 pads as a .pgm.
It would be memory dependent as to whether or not the MPC could load the .pgm, but you see what I'm talking about.

2. You would be making a copy of the HD onto a CD.
The MPC would use the same way it uses the HD but it would be read only.

3. Right now they are set for Level 2 and Mode 2, but I think I changed them to that when I was doing something specific.
I can't be sure the PC that has Nero, MPCeditor and all that stuff on it is the internet computer.
The Studio is Mac only, no PC's allowed.

What I basically do is all my Samplers have a ZIP drive, HD and CDrom attached to them.
I work with ZIP's and backup to the HD and occassionally burn a CD or used a CD from a sample library.

ok, but if I don't have 64 samples in a folder the auto assign won't work?

And what do you have against PC's

By ntalec Sun Jun 05, 2005 2:30 am
Doesn't have to be 64, that the maximum it can auto assign.

nevermind answered my own question.

"When I went in the folder with the wave files and renamed them something simple like 3"

I do think it was one, if not the first, suggestion given was to use really short filenames. Recycle appending long suffixes with a space is really out of our control.

"I do think it was one, if not the first, suggestion given was to use really short filenames. Recycle appending long suffixes with a space is really out of our control."

Actually MPC3000, I failed to mention that even when you name the wave files chopped in recycle with just a 1 character name and then export a AKP file and import the AKP file into the MPC editor it still adds the~1 to it. So I did try that suggestion of naming the wave files with really short names from recycle, at least thats how I understood the suggestion. Now I understand that you must mean after the AKP is exported you still have to go in the folder and rename there, but then you cant import the AKP because you have changed the wave file names that it's looking for and it won't recognize the files. So now Ntalec has explained the Auto Assign function to me and after exporting an AKP from recycle and then going in and renaming each and every file with a low number of characters and then using the auto assign, NOT the AKP file to bring the waves into MPC editor, only then can you export a program from MPC editor that can be burned to CD and will work in the MPC 2000xl . So from my experience over the last few days it seems that MPC editor still has a problem Importing the actual AKP files and then exporting programs that can be burned to CD that can be read in the MPC. I know it works for Zip disc, but not for CD's. Try it, maybe it's something that can be included as a fix in your next version of MPC editor. Don't get it twisted, I still like the program and I'm going to purchase it, but the whole recyle thing to MPC program is not as straigt foward as it seems, again Not to CD anyway. Hopefully these post will help the next person trying to do the same thing.

Thanks to everyone for your help, espcially Ntalec (who must actually live on this forum because he responds almost instanly LOL)

Peace

Nah what I do is whenever I have a track playing or some vocals or whatever I leave the studio and go to the PC browse a couple of things and go back.
I take lots of breaks even when people are tracking vocals and stuff I'll leave them in the booth with PT looped for multiple takes and move around.
The most important thing is to stay focused and functional so you gotta avoid fatique.

Chopping in recycle is cool but if you aren't in need of the other aspects of Recycle to me it was never the way to chop on a computer just to get individual samples.
You could use something like Sound Forge's Auto Region function and it's Extract Region function to come up with individual .wav files and then do an Auto Assign.
What you are dealing with is based on Recycle not the MPCeditor. Recycle is doing things necessary for it to be able to identify the files for the MIDI triggers and such.
Like how Sound Forge will come up and tell when detects extra or non-standard info attached to a .wav and ask if you would like to keep it or delete it.
Some versions of Nero can't read .wav files that come from PT because of the additional info attached to the file.
If I create a .akp in CDextract it doesn't have any naming issues or burning problems.
I can't really test Recycle, I have no idea what happened to my installation disk and it's not on the PC anymore.

That's cool. It's working for me now, thanks to this forum, and the work arounds.

Did you try renaming the single WAV file to a short name prior to opening it in Recycle. That way, the extra appending that recycle wants to do will not exceed 8 characters. That way the WAV files will match what is embedded in the AKP and thus the program is created from this data.

I can't really test it at the moment: No Windows, no Recycle.

Thanks MPC 3000, hadn't thought of that I will give that a try also. But this system that I am working with now works great. I chop the file in Recycle and export the AKP file, then I take CKrename and rename all the files in the folder with something really short. I then open MPC editor find that folder do an auto assign and then save the program from MPC editor into that same folder. Then when I burn it to disc and open in the MPC I'm ready to make beautiful music again!

Thanks again, you will be receiving my $29.00 in about 23 days or whenever my demo runs out, lol.
