As far as jazz goes, still nothing blows me away as much as the John Coltrane Quartet - late 50's / early 60's. Spiritual shtt.

Have a listen to some Django Reinhardt- top guitarist from 20s (?)

And of course Billie Holliday

Right now i'm really into east-african jazz/funk. Most of it is recorded pretty bad, and the quality is sometimes a bit annoying, but it's just so damn funky. It just has that groove to it that sucks you into the record completely.
Try Tesfa-Maryam Kidane or Mulatu Astatk.

What i love about 70's fusion is that you're guaranteed to see all the SAME names on each others Albums!!!!Supporting each other!!!

Also, them Mizzell brothers....Larry & Fonce....ILLEST songwriters for so many jazz fusionists...Donald Byrd & Johnny hammond as i named earlier!!!

Could tell their vocal styles anywhere...true signature!!!

The best thing I can tell you to do is to go out and make the "Miles Davis Autgobiography" the first thing on your summer reading list. Not only is it entertaining, funny and a quick read, but it will also introduce to you to all the jazz guys from the 1940s or so to the present. It will give you a million places to start listening. One of my favorite all time books. Have fun with it.
