^Your right. It's a misunderstanding of how the SP functions for sure. However, I know a trick to make the S950 ring and sound tinny too. I'm sure Pete knows this trick, which is probably where some of the dupeing comes into play.

there is a thread on here with a trick for the sp1200, involving the samplerate.

Im currently searching for it, trying to find it.

I come from the world of the SP12 turbo/S-950 combo so I understand Pete's old ways. 8)
Yeah the filter on the S-950 was and still is one of the better filters.
I have actually come across 2 samplers that were made in the last couple of years that filters and effects are undeniably the best I have ever used they were short life units tho.
I would suggest that people shopping for samplers like the Emax, S-950, W-30 expand the view a bit, you be surprised what you might find.
It's those two units that make me so mad about the filter and sample rate conversion on the MPC-2000xl, since I know Akai could have pulled it off right if they wanted to.

Oh, yes, if the SP-1200 allows any form of sample rate reduction, it could certainly be the trick.

^I'll eat my words if Tic pulls the rabit out the hat, till then, i'm sticking by what I said. If thier is a way to reduce the bit rates, through modification, or software trickery, it's all news too me.

Oh man, the rumor is not a lie, there is a secret. And I see why they dont tell anybody. And it only took 20 minutes with the rubber hose on his knuckles. "You'll never play that XL again Pete

Hey, this stuff is interesting... How the hell can you pitch down on the Sp without getting the famous ring mod sound?

and about that link to the PR beattape, D-man was supposed to send me a yousendit link last night to share with you guys... I guess hes busy, but I hope he sends it asap. Can´t wait to hear that shit.

which ones dude or is this another pete-rock type of super-secret?

Yo what's up with that mixtape?/

to avoid ringmod sound (aliasing) you can cut the highs when sampling, or just pipe it through a filtered output afterwards. there are a lot of EQ/alias tricks.

Nah El, that's not how you do it on the SP.
Best thing is if you understand the SP you get approximately 15 sec of SP sampling that sounds just like the standard 10 sec.

Notice how very little of the Pete Rock stuff has that heavy Ring Modulator ping sound?

Ah, well maybe I don;t know the secret then, I am not sure how you would avoid the RM sound then. Hmm, I really ought to play with one, the emax gives me what I need, but I'd love to know the SP-1200 nice and deep too.

Actually, if that trick applys to the emax holla on the PM ;)

Funny El, I never even thought to check the Emax that way.
The Emax kinda gets me some times when I try to do 16 or 20.
Some things just won't sound right with those rates, like a built in resonance take over.

Nah man, I stay on 28k most of the time, it gets really tinny lower down and you'll need to filter it, or indi it and hit it with some eq, depending on the material. Anything above 28 I really don;t care too much for, but it's a really fun piece to me. Lots of people hate it, but I dig it.

Took a quick run around the Emax, and doesn't have the capapbility.
Would be nice if it did, you would be able to get about 27 sec at 28k.
