What part of Pete Rock using an S950 can't yall understand. The Soul Survivor is nothing but ringy tinny sounding sp1200 drums. From the Snare to the hats to the long samples. Filtering will remove most of that ring modulation as El stated. The Soul Survivor 1 lp was made with the 1200/S950 as was Main Ingredient. You don't hear it a lot on Pete's music because longer samples are on the S950.....if someone can contest this.....please by all means provide valid proof. I'm sick of these rumors and so called top-secret tips. Sometimes I think kats just like to start shit to mess with people and generate chaos amongst us amateurs.....hahahah.

Imagine how fun it would be to own an EMAX 1 and not tell anybody that you're using it with the 1200 to make your beats, as they wonder in amazement as to how you can possibly maintain 30 seconds worth of loops....my sp1200 runs on lucky charms cereal....it's magic dog, magic!

They also multitrack like mofos, but nah, I know there is a trick to it, what I stumbled upon might not be it, but it certainly lets you know that there is more in there than you think, typical emu, the emax surprises like mthat as well. These are machines that reward patience and practice.

Seriously tho Drum, the thing is Pete undoubtably has the SP drums but the thing is his SP drums just don't ring as heavy without losing the SP sound.

You can do this after the fact with EQ but the SP will do this for you if you just change your method slightly and you will get the equivalent of having more sample time.

No doubt Akai should have had Pete holding a S-950 talking about the filters since they is all over the early work, but Pete definitely got more use out of the SP than most and he did use the S-950 to blur the line.
You know how ackward it is to seq ext gear from the SP, so in a SP/950 setup working inside the SP is easier so you are going to max that.
Having a SP give you the equivalent of 15 sec compared to 10 sec might not seem like much until you think about the SP was his seq as well.
It's not a mod, it's not some grand illusion it just the way you can make certain things interact on the SP.
I would even bet there are a lot of people doing it without realizing they are doing anything different.
The problem comes from people talking trying to sound like they are on some old secret - ish.
Nothing about the SP changes it's just more or less the workflow. You actually maximize what you are doing in relationship to what the SP is doing.

Pete's story will never be totally clear and it shouldn't be because it takes away from the work he put in.

Here's a funny note;
think about the early Heavy D stuff Pete did, it sounds like Pete with way less 950 filtering.
Pitch Heavy's voice up make the recording sound somewhat filtered and it starts to sound just like the first Pete Rock and CL stuff.

I agree...I don't question Pete's style or his ability to create beautiful hiphop music. I could give a donkey's ass about his techniques on the sp1200....I know he uses much gear and a gang of engineers to make it all come together!

Oh and to be quite honest it's really not all that akward to use the sp1200 to master other rack gear. My homey and I use the EMAX with the SP as you probably already know and shit is just as easy as using the 60 and the 950 in tandem.

Yeah, I built my skillz on the SP12 turbo/S-950 combo.
Back when they cost real money. Ouch.
Just you lose some features of basic sequencer, notice the MMT8.
Seems so long ago........

That's why I trip on people talking about MadLib, they act like he really works in a simplistic nature.
He may use a SP303 and VS but look at all the gear he uses to feed it and then his engineer takes over.

oh for sure....that is totally misguided statement when he kats claiming they use only an SP-303.....sure it might be your main source of sampling and shit but c'mon be honest and list the majority of the equipment you're using. Nowadays everybody loves to experiment so who cares anyway.....I'm not giving a shit what one uses just as long as they're bringing me some earjoyment.

And yeah i might sound contradictory regarding Pete Rock using an MPC-2000xl but that is one of a few exceptions.....and actually i must reiterate and say that I don't mind what one is using to create above satisfactory results. Certain gear will hinder that creativeness.....true?

Ntalec, what sequencer features do you lose on the SP1200 when you use it to sequence something else?

I may be getting to spend some time on an sp1200 in a week or so. I think I may fall in love with it and have some kids and make philly stress the godmother :P

I know for one you lose one of your channels which really sucks ass.....therefore you'll only have 7 outputs functioning without cutting each other off....

By elmacaco Thu Jun 09, 2005 4:02 am
so each midi channel you use you lose one output, do you lose any fader functionality? all sounds are still on the mix out right? And if you have two racks with it, do you lose another channel?

I have read the SP manual, but it's been a while and I didn't catch anything that spoke on that.

Hmmm, I should chime in on this seeing that I too cut my teeth on a SP Turbo + s950.

As far as I know, you don't loose any functions, and you don't loose any outputs ether. Reason being, they're connected through 1 midi cable and your routing the outputs from each machine seperately to the console.. I've never used all 8 outputs of both machines at the same time, it's always a combonation of the two.

They're THE dynamic duo. Like PB&J.

If you notice in that old pic, I have a couple of synth modules.
That's when the SP as your sequencer becomes arkward.
It wasn't the SP/950 combo, it was when you starting trying to use more MIDI devices.

Ha!
That was my plan for so long but i simply couldnt afford a SP.

Well, im letting my emax go, I guess im just not at the right point to integrate it in my setup for now. I'll get back at it soon i hope.
ASR+S950(+MPC) should be dope aswell.

Concerning all this sellout crap:
Some people will never learn. Of course Hip-Hop aint no sp1200-lowpass-crunch anymo! This is almost 10 years ago. You cant stop young artists (or even PR in this case) from trying to evolve their sound. Switching your game after doing that warm 90s sound for so long is something that happens. Hate the industry not the Artists. I know,... blabla keeping it real. But come'on holmes, some ppl eat from this. And as long as its Music that comes from your heart and not from the preset bank its all good. Some people make wack 16bit sample beats some ppl produce gay synthbeats, some ppl make homo 12bit beats....

On a side note,:
Honestly, would you say no to AKAI if they would let you promote a MPC???

Anyhow, to each his own. I just cant stand ppl hating on Artists like this that have an incredible career behind them and try to get a foot in the door of the payoff rap is getting since the last 4-5 years. You dont own PR, so quit hating on how hes expressing himself.

Just try and name a producer that has been frequently (lets say for the last 3 years) selling 12bit beats. Or atleast beats that sound like 1996
you get the point...?

All in all, dont get me wrong. I too love the first soul survivor and the main ingredient mecca & the soulbrother....
I do not have rig of motifs, tritons, trinitys and rolands. And yes I'd cop a sp1200 or a mpc60 if I had extra cash...
just stop the nostalgic hateration and on the same point dont get lost in the industry and this commercial plastik shit.
