The big Emu's have mega-sampletime, lots of features etc but they are still the typical sampler type features.
The ASR has a lot of
proprietory stuff going on that other sampler never did, can't do and probably still won't do for a while (if ever).
A lot of stuff they guys at Ensoniq came up with would have turned the music industry upside down it they had been a bigger compnay.
Finances killed the ASR, since that was what made them take the cheaper design format of the MR-synth add sampling and make the ASR-x/x-Pro.
Those boxes carried the ASR name nothing more.
Things as simple as getting to 32meg, being able to convert SMF and WAV could have saved the ASR.
The Ultra is a better sampler, but the ASR is a better
