I started gettin into my S950 since I'm using my 60 alot more than the 3k right now. With the 3k you got crazy sample time so another sampler isn't neccesary, but I can't say the same for the 60. I made a couple decisions though...

60 + S950= Better set up than using the 3k alone. Since the S950 has hot filters, plenty of sample time (at least mine does) and the 60 got the drums.

But...

The drums on the 3k hit harder. Or I mean to say the output is louder, and that bugs me b/c I'm having to pump up the levels on my mixer to get some thumpin drums. I can't wait for Drumatic to get his 60 back so we can hear the difference on a 60 w/ the output modification....

Don't forget you need to hit the input of the 60 pretty solid on it's level.

Here's something I've always found interesting; if you convert samples and load them into the 60 it goes through a Normalizing process.
I would like to be able to compare that in the 60 to the original un-processed sound to see what the it actually changed.
I suspect it's more related to the bit difference of the 60 and the 3000 not amplitude.

I still think normalizing in software and loading in your 60 won't compensate for low output gain. Sure it helps a bunch but don't compare to how loud the 3000 is.....

Wait am I the only sucker that went through with the 60 mod? Damn I've been assed out for nearly 2.5 weeks without my drum machine....that's why i've been on my homie's 1200/Emax set up. Ahhhhhh ---- It's all gravy. I'm glad I took the plunge....Forat charged me 485.00 with shipping and so now i've gotta sell some of these albums to compensate for the financial set back. At least I'll be prepared for the vinyl 12" release coming in Fall of 2005.

I guess in order to do a before and after mod. comparison properly, I'd have to get you all 2 files both containing the same beat. I have a few in mind. I'll simply load up a beat i've already recorded using nearly the same fader and eq settings on my console and record it as best as I possibly can.

Before I got my 3.10 OS i used to try and load samples via MIDI and I tell you the quality sounds like shit. It flattens out the wave and made all my drums sound muddy.....unless you like that sorta thing.

I also used to record my drums as loud as possible - until the 60 was clipping with the !!P (peak sensor) going off every single drum. The only problem with that was that you can't PITCH DOWN. If you do you'll notice the digital clipping almost instantly....and since I pitch all my samples down from 45 (-55) I have to avoid peaking at all costs. And for this reason:
the VU monitoring device's latency with its peak values.....causes me extreme grief.....which is another reason i feel my drums could be hitting even harder but do not because I usually record samples at fairly low levels in order to avoid clipping at all costs. How bunk is that!?

He's just jealous, that's why it bugs him. He doesn't quite get what we are talking about and takes the digs at the 3k personally.

Nah, I'm not talking about normalizing your samples.

If you take some .wav files and convert them top load into the MPC-60exp as it loads them for the first time the 60's screen will say Normalizing Sample
I am referring the 60 processing the file.

Yeah I noticed that too, I guess in changing from 16 to 12 it needs to adjust the volume or something.

higher output level would be good, but I aint shellin out no $400 for it.

That's my guess also.

You could spend $400 on a kick ass stereo DI box or Compressor (with mad gain) and do plenty good. Some of those Tube DI boxes have close to 30db of gain, that is PLENTY enough to get those drums LOUD and FAT; nice for beefin up a signal.

You could use it on other gear as well; bass guitar always sounds good through a nice tube DI box.

nah nah - you know i had already asked all those questions regarding the output gain......and thought about getting the DI box but this is more than that. We'll see what happens....it's already a done deal....i'm all paid up and my MPC is on its way back to me-----should be here Friday afternoon or Monday the latest.

Cmon Philly. You can't express your opinion and not expect others to type how they feel. You had to have known you were going to start something.
