Tips for finding the key of a song/sample

Anyone have any tips for this? Ive been trying to play along with alot of songs, and sometimes i can get the key easily, sometimes it takes forever. I know all my minor scales, and am going to start learning major scales. But being able to find the key of a song would step my game up alot.. Any ear training tips?

I wonder if a cheap digital guitar tuner would help?

get close then you have to use the cents tuning. Alot of samples wont be dead on so use the fine tuning adjustment on your keyboards pitch to find it. It just takes practice and ear training.

easiest way for me is to determine what notes the bass is playing cause the bass doesnt play chords

I believe the "Tonic" is always the note which the key of a song is in.. its sometimes the first note, but you can tell which note it is b/c its the one which makes a phrase/riff sound complete once its hit. I would try and match that note up with your keyboard/guitar tuner.

If you have a computer then download sonar4 (it comes with a tuner installed) then simply play the sample and it will tell you what note the sample is and indicate how much out of tune it is.

Its not hard at all... Just play a tone on the piano or whatever and find out if the key of the song is LOWER or HIGHER than the one you played. Takes 5 seconds, tops.

am i correct in saying that if you find the right Key it will almost disapear in the sound ?
