Yo! I saw this cat's stuff on ebay selling tip manuals. Anyone here got any of his books?
If so whats your review?
This guy says he primarily uses an MPC60 so I thought it might be worth the purchase. BEAT MAKING ON 2000XL is solely for the XL. I am needing more insight on the 60 any suggestion ladies and gents?

It's good in that it's comprehensive. I have to give it to the guy. He put a lot of work into the book. But I have to say that a lot of the technical stuff about equipment use and the beat making process wasn't that helpful. It was either stuff I already knew or stuff I disagreed with him about. But the rest is good. He's got a diagram in the back for suggested studio hookup, he even estimates prices and stuff for you. He has a lot of different versions of contracts in there you can photo copy and has some good advice for beginners on selling beats. Skip the section on who to study because you hopefully know all that already. Those that don't know need more than this book to help them.

So, helpful as it is, I must say from personal experience that what helped me the most with making beats was reading equipment manuals, talking to cats who make beats, trial & error, and coming to places like this board for reading/discussion. Research and trial & error are really the most important things besides natural talent that will get your sh!t to light up. Everybody is different, no one has the only answer and even if they did, they wouldn't just spell it out for you in a book. Still, peace to Sa'id for writing that sh!t.

Probably not most of us prefer to be hands on and build are own methods, if ya know what I mean.

I bought the book because I'm a 60 whore, Don;t waste your money, homie gives some bad advice IMO, and you're better off figuring it out with the manual and practice.

yeah i have it too its a noob book... not to helpful i look at it all the time and say what was i thinking... but anyway....

I received a free copy from Sai'd and I must say the most interesting material was reading on his own methods of how he acquired his gear. Also he does help promote song structure and history behind various jazz, rock, soul and funk music genres. But yeah he stresses using the mpc-60 as a sequencer ONLY and using an S950 to sample everything into. I on the other hand sample all my drums and percussion into my 60 and music samples and bass into the 950. But I do understand the reasoning for it because again as we all know the 60 has such a quiet output.....I think everyone in the industry knows that.....I guess that's why Premo don't sample drums into it? He probably prefers to use the GAINS on the s950?

Didn't the Beatnuts used to use the 60? I swore they did? I think it was on Street Level I remember someone saying that or maybe it was Grand Puba on a Brand Nubian track???

I heard from someone that worked with primo that he did sample into the 60 as well as the 950. The other elements of the book aren't bad, but the whole get your production thing going was weak. Plus it was OS 2.x specific, so I guess that's why they wouldn't sample into it so much.

Good looking out gentlemen. Thanks once again for kicking some mad knowledge on that. I will take heed it seems the census is saying the book is a lil wack. So thumbs down it is unless the next response go on about how the book saved their career or got them an 3 Album record deal...
