THE 2K DOES HAVE A DIFFERENT SOUND!

this is athing i've wondering through out the time i've owned the 1k, and
i'm happy to come to the conclusion that the 2kXL does different sound than 1k and to my ears, it sounds better. i was rocking just a kick, snare and a
tambourine and felt that i was getting a warmer and punchier sound (escpecially on the kicks). im just glad i found it now and don't have to
think about it ever again.

Which one sounds better, the 1k or the 2k? Hard to understand from your post.

I have an MPC1k at home and use the 2kxl at the studio I work at. For a cleaner sound I prefer to use the 1k. The 2kxl seems to have a warm and dirty sound, which is good sometimes. But the 1k samples more accurately, and your samples are already warm and dirty because they come off vinyl.

Word, I believe the 1000 and 2KXL both have the same converters and audio-engines.

i've heard something else? can't put my finger on it, but something like
they have different a/d converters. but i didn't let this affect my judgement,
i just made a statement based on what i heard.

me, i see music as colors. i suppose it's kinda usual, at least between
my buddies. the 1k sound to me is greyish, plain grey or similar.
the 2k sound is more like a black or dark grey, and this is the sound i want.
but propably ill stick to my 1k, i dont want no hassle zip's and stuff.
actually, the guy whose mp it was couldn't get the zip work at first and
he had to restart more than 5 times. i dont want none of that :D

I can't imagine the difference being anything other than minute. Indeed, the fact that the question comes up again and again just goes to show that any difference is very difficult to hear. Pretty much what you would expect from two identically specified sound engines from the same manufacture.

Comparing a 1k/2k to a MPC60 or a SP1200 is obviously going to definite variations..

Still, its an interesting topic..

I like the color thing that's hot. I have a 4000 I use at my partners house and we unpluged the 4k and put the 1k it the same set-up and the 1k was the same as the 4 but with less features. But I still can see your point.

"THE 2K DOES HAVE A DIFFERENT SOUND!"

Why is this the MPC1000 forum?

He must have an MPC2000 up for auction.

The outputs might be the same... but the analog to digital converter is definitely different. I've sat in the studio sampling the same exact thing on each MPC and came up with different results.

sampling INTO the machines might yield different results.

I have both the 1k and the 2k XL. (still undecided as to which one I'm going to get rid of)

As far as playback, I found both to be identical given that the samples came from the same source (Logic Pro 7). The only difference I've noticed between the two (technical bs aside) is the overall "feel" of the sequencer.

Both sequencers yield an extremely use-able feel. I'm accustomed to the feel of the 2k xl, but after a few minutes of playing with 1k, the difference was minute.

To me, they both sound gray and airy. To get the punch-ness, and the grit I run the outputs through a series of outboard pre amps. This takes the drums from gray to a reddish-glowing gray.

I compared the 1k and 4k with the exact same wav files and the 4k was a lot more cleaner and punchier. Maybe a lil too clean sounding for my taste. The Mpc's do have different sounds though. The fact of the matter is that they all don't use the same exact parts and same configurations. Sometimes machines of the exact same model are made with different parts and specifications later on down the road because sometimes problems are found, and sometimes certain parts aren't available to the manufacturers anymore.

Again, all the different models of MPC do have a different sound and feel. But it's not really a huge difference though. A lot of your sound is going to come down to what your sampling from, how you uniquely process those sounds, and how you mix them anyway.
