Swing

I´ve been thinking of getting sp12/00 and sequence it with my MPC60. So I´m asking is the swing of these machines completely different from each other? Could someone post two beats made with mpc60 and sp that I could hear the difference?

i think youd need to use it to really know how its gonna effect your sound right...

ive used the 60 and the way the swing is set up, its easy dope..
havnt used a sp but i heard the swing is nice too

I know MPC60 sounds great and the swing dope because I´ve been using it for quite a few years. I live in finland and its almost impossible to get sp and try it before I go and buy one.

The swing is different, the SP's clock is pretty unstable, even when externally synced. In this way it is easy to get some swings popular in easrly hip hop on the Sp but take a little work on an MPC.

the swing inherently sounds better on the sp1200 than any other sampler i've heard because its internal clock is so sloppy as EL said but the MPC-60/3000 easily rival it with a little work. If you dig Dj Premier's beats then go with the MPC-60 if you dig Dj Pete Rock go with the SP12.....but under no circumstances should you ever purchase and sp12 and control it with a MPC-60...you're better off purchasing the EMAX 1.....ask EL!!!

plus if ure sp gets busted some how electronically good luck finding computer chips their not running out and they already run out of a lot of chips inthe asr10

Hi guys, had my MPC60II for short while now. I have read the manual and I continue to read it off and on just for kicks because I do that type of thing. I have been wanting to use the SWING function. Why? well I havent really messed around with it at all, for instance I know where its located and I have an idea what it does. It does not explain the technique of applying swing to a beat in the manual it just tells you how to. Let me explain further. I produce deep house music. From what I have read in magazines alot of house producers rely heavily on SWING. I can hear the effects of SWING on beats and I would like to replicate that feel in my productions. For all that dont know, I think house music gets alot of its production techniques from R&B, Latin jazz and disco. So the sound has a similar feel to those genres I just mentioned. Im not a music major or an expert on the MPC60II yet so a dumb down version of an explanation would be appreciated. I have owned an MPC2000(nonxl) for about 3 years so I know a bit about the MPC enviroment so im cool with that. What I need to know is:

1. Swing: 50% is the default my MPC's are at mostly. Whats, what 60 or 70 or ? how much swing?
2. Where and How do I program swing? Kick, Snare, Hihat, where and how should I add SWING to obtain the feel Im looking for?
3. Should I apply swing to the whole rhythm track? What about Keys or Paino (i.e. loops or chords)?
4. Can you add swing to a beat youve already tracked? If so How?
If anyone can shed some light on this I would be thankful oh yeah another thing If anyone knows how to do this on the MPC2000(nonxl), thats cool to because I'm sure I can take the idea to MPC60II.

You should read that part of the manual again, set swing to dfferent percentages, then hold the timing correct button and a pad and listen to the effect of different percentages. By hitting move existing when you are in the timing correct screen you can shift an existing sequence. That's in the manual too.

The SP parts can still be found, there just isn't enough for production type levels.
Open the SP up a notice there are only a few parts that aren't off the shelf.
The Filter chips, which can be purchased from Japan or have a tech perform the mod to logic for those 2 channels.
The problem inside the SP that would be a problem is the BOOT ROM, but they are pretty reliable.
If you have a SP with all the ECO's done to it and the new style power supply you should have to deal with anything other than replacing buttons and maybe a weak display in a 12.
The ASR-10 on the other hand consisted of several prorietary modular boards and the basic procedure for repair was to take out a board and put a new one in.
So a broke ASR is your repair path.
