What are current projects your an involved in?
Right now I'm busy trying to finish up the Phill Most The Soulman "The Lo-Fi Theory" lp, which features me with 2004 rhymes on top of beats I did back around 1994. The first single will probably be a 7" on the Puma Strut label, "Walkin' Papers" b/w "The Real Thing". A lot of people just know me from my magazine articles and break cds, but before I ever got deep into beat digging I was an mc. I stopped rhyming seriously about ten years ago, but I've never stopped writing rhymes- that's something that I don't think ever leaves you if you're a truly creative person and love the art of hip hop lyricism. The only reason I'm getting back into rhyming at my age is because I see the artform really slipping lately. Not that I think that I'm the guy to save it or anything, but I'm just not hearing a lot of the kind of stuff that used to really get me amped. I first tried making records as a rapper back in the era of KRS, Kane, G-Rap, Rakim and dudes like that. Those cats made it hard to compete, man! They were constantly coming out with new records that at that time were like "wow". Nowadays I just don't see many emcees who do stuff that makes my jaw drop. There are plenty of people who I like, but not many that are astounding lyrically. That doesn't mean that I think that I'm gonna be better than everybody else that's out here today, no way in hell am I saying that. But I do think I can bring a little bit of substance to the game that's severely lacking right now. Hip Hop is a dying art, man, and I feel like somebody needs to stand up and rep that, so why not me? Whether it will be accepted in 2004, I don't know. But as long as I'm happy with it I will be blasting it in my jeep constantly, that's my word. I'm also working on a group out of Pittsburgh called G.U.N. (Greed's Ultimate Nemesis). So far the stuff we're doing is straight fire as far as I'm concerned! Real raw hip hop, but also some stuff that I think could be commercial hits. We're still working things out, but watch for G.U.N. later this year, for sure.
What happened to your "Soulman Battle Breaks" record, was it ever released?
No, I never finished recording that record. I did most of the beats, but I just got bored with the whole concept. I got the idea in part from seeing some of the break records my man Paul Nice was doing, and I was hearing that dudes were making some decent money doing break records. Aside from Paul's and a few others, though, I thought most of those shits were mega wack. I definitely will not be doing any break records in the future, I have other things to do that I'm more interested in.
I once read, that you sold breaks to the Dusty Kid (Dusty Fingers Series), did some of them actually appear on the comps?
I must admit that the early volumes of Dusty Fingers had quite a few records that I sold to them. But I'm not trying to take credit for the success of that series or anything. The real fire came on later volumes that I had no involvement with. So those dudes did their thing on their own.
Are you still buying records ?
Not much. I have too many records already. I'm basically running out of room for all this vinyl, so I'm doing more getting rid of records than acquiring new ones. The whole beatdigging thing bores me these days, to be honest. It's not fresh anymore. Everybody and they're momma has records now, so it's just no longer anything special.
Would you regard it a good thing, when 99% of funky breaks were known and easy accessible to most people?
Well, that's damn near how it is now with all the comps and all the info you can get on the internet. Making beats still comes down to creativity on the part of the beatmaker. Records are just tools to help you bring your own creativity out, in my opinion. Creative dudes are gonna do well even if their record collection is lacking, trust me. I've seen it over and over.
Is there a special funny/weird/??? story about buying/getting records ?None that I can think of right now, but probably a lot of them.
If there were a record cover library, accessible for anyone, would you contribute some rare and funky scans, or do you think that wouldn't be a good idea?Nah, I wouldn't do it just because I have better things to do with my time. I'll leave stuff like that to the young single dudes with no kids and a lot of time on their hands!
Have you ever thought about making a fake super rare 100 pressings only sibirian library record, just to add a mystery to the world of digging ?No, but on the cover art for my "Neva Stop Diggin'" cd I planted a few fake 45s with homemade labels, just to see if anybody would be fooled. Nobody ever asked me about them, so I guess nobody fell for the joke! Diggers are smart these days, man.
Would you rather be picked up by Bam & The Soulsonic Force with their timetravelling spaceship to experience a week in the Bronx, early 70s or get 1 million US $ in cash?I grew up a half hour away from the Bronx during those days, so that's nothing to me. A week in the Bronx was ROUGH back then, homeboy! I was in mild mannered Norwalk, Connecticut, so I was blessed enough to experience those early days of hip hop and still live in a peaceful environment. But I went to parties and saw all of those dudes back then- Cold Crush, Flash, Bam, damn near everybody. So to answer your question, it's no contest- give me the cool mil and I'm good.
Back in the days, what was the gear that was mostly used at parties? Did you see many echo-boxes, drum computers, other effects or even synthesizers?
Way way back in the days I wasn't paying much attention to all that, I was just rockin' to the music and checking out the shorties at parties. Some of the stuff I remember- and we're talking about the early days of hip hop here, around 1980, was the old beat boxes, echo chambers, strobe lights, stuff like that. One of the things I remember seeing for at parties wasn't music gear, but still interesting- for awhile people were wearing these things called Zany Zappers at parties. They were like these toy glasses with lights on them that would blink on and off rapidly. If you were high it would really bug you out to see these things blinking throughout the crowd. That's one old school thing I never heard anybody else mention before, I guess because it was a very short lived thing. Another thing few people talk about are plates, which were like one-off records that dj's used to press up on their own. I guess they were like acetates or something. But I remember being at parties and hearing rapping and scratching, but nobody would be on the mic and nobody would be at the tables! I finally figured out that it was the record playing on the turntable, but there were no records out that sounded like that at the time. Later I learned that they were "plates"- dj's would take their own tapes and get them pressed up to spin at parties. I'd love to get my hands on one of those old plates now, those would be the rarest old school hip hop records ever. Later when I moved to Philly for the 1st time, like around 1982, I remember seeing cats with keyboards onstage. That was when electro hip hop, which I hated back then, was really starting to jump off.
Shouldn't every hip hop artist today give 1% to a fund for oldschool cats?
No, every LABEL that sells hip hop and profits off of hip hop should kick back some money to the pioneers to make sure that they're at least all right, if not rich. the labels are the ones that really profit financially off of rap. The debate would be who gets paid and who doesn't- of course some people wouldn't get what they feel that they should get, but you have to start somewhere. Anything is better than nothing. Billions have been made off of this form of music, the cats who created it should be compensated in some form. I have a lot of respect for ?uestlove for trying to get that ball rolling.
What's you view on electro funk?Not my favorite form of hip hop, but did love some of those records when they came out. 1984, you couldn't get away from electro. Stuff like Shannon "Let The Music Play", Xena "On The Upside", that one "Yo Little Brother", some of that stuff was hot. But for the most part I always preferred the raw breakbeat style hip hop, the real shit.

What's your view on hip hop today?Ever changing. I hate the idea of coming off like a bitter old man. Believe me, I'm a dude that accepts the fact that times change and that the music can't and shouldn't be exactly what it was 20 years ago. In actuality, the prevailing sound in hip hop has always changed every two or three years. I like plenty of new shit, some new stuff is real creative. But overall, the creativity is not there. Right now most dudes play it so safe, it's obvious they just want to make their little pop hits and sell a lot of records to all the idiots who don't even really appreciate good shit. I don't begrudge anybody their right to be successful financially, but at what cost? And please understand, I like PLENTY of pop music, I don't have a problem with that. But if that means that the raw, gritty and real hip hop that I loved has to be a thing of the past, that's a problem.

Are you into 80s funk and obscure disco records?
I'm into anything that sounds good to me. I'm very open minded. If you really love music you have to be open to whatever might hit your ears and feels good to you. I can even appreciate a corny ass pop record, but I don't listen to everything in the same way. I liked Outkast's "Hey Ya!", but not in the way that I liked Ultramagnetic's "Critical Beatdown" lp. 80's funk and obscure disco are not what I'd call my favorite categories, but I can like certain things in almost any genre.
What is the highest amount of money you ever paid for a record?
I don't think I've ever paid more than around $150 for any record, believe it or not. I've paid that much a number of times. It's wild, 'cuz I'll pay $300 for a throwback jersey that I really want and won't think anything of it, but I don't like the idea of spending a lot for a record. They just aren't that important to me. That whole status game is wack to me, I could care less about all that shit. I'm more into finding something nice for dumb cheap, something that nobody else is up on at all.
Should there be a movie about digging?Sure, why not? If there is one it'll almost definitely be fake, but I'd still like to see it. Somebody probably will do it, and soon. Wasn't "Hi-Fidelity" about digging, kinda? that's another movie I need to see soon. 4KXL EDIT

What are your weapons of choice when production a dope track? Are you into old gear like big mixing boards, tape machines? Do you like old drum computers and synthesizers?
I'm not really a gear head at all. Once I start thinking about that stuff too much it takes away from thinking creatively. All I use is the MPC 2000, Roland VS-1880 workstation, Technics 1200 and a Pioneer CDJ, that's it. I have other stuff like a Triton sound module, but I rarely use that stuff. I'm not so caught up in sound that I care about recording to 2 inch tape, using old mixing boards and all that shit. I'm always gonna feel like it's about the performance- did I program a hot beat? Are the rhymes tight? That's always gonna be the most important thing, the creativity that you put into it, not what gear you utilize.
What are your future plans?
For Phill Stroman, to keep living and raise my kids to be productive and positive members of society. For Soulman, to continue being involved in hip hop for as long as I feel like doing it (I'm getting up there in age, so it may not be much longer.... I still think youthfully, though!).

I'm not so caught up in sound that I care about recording to 2 inch tape, using old mixing boards and all that shit. I'm always gonna feel like it's about the performance- did I program a hot beat? Are the rhymes tight? That's always gonna be the most important thing, the creativity that you put into it, not what gear you utilize.
What are your future plans?
For Phill Stroman, to keep living and raise my kids to be productive and positive members of society. For Soulman, to continue being involved in hip hop for as long as I feel like doing it (I'm getting up there in age, so it may not be much longer.... I still think youthfully, though!).
