Library records

I just copped my first library record yesterday. A Boosey & Hawkes joint "all that jazz", tight stuff!

There was also one KPM joint in there, but it was 1920's jazz and i didn't have any extra cash on me so i didn't bother.

Sorry if this sounds dumb; what is a library record ?

library records were records unavailable to the public that were used by television and film companies when they needed music and sound effects in their productions. there were many different companies making these records, kpm i think was one of the biggest.

i borrowed a bunch of kpm records from a college once....didnt like them at all. no sample material at all and all the music was a bit drab

let me know if you got access to more libraries. Got trades for days in that field.

it depends on what the libraries were meant to be used for of course.. if your making a movie about 19th century farmers then you probably won't want to use fusion jazz records for that one, ya dig?

yeah i love me some weird shyt, instructional records and children's records and stuff like that. you probably won't find too many beats in 'em but you should find some dope sounds or at least some skits.

oh i forgot, i have this one BBC sound effect record with horror sound effects, i guess it's a library record too? anyway i've got some great sounds from that.... from cabbages being beat up and shyt hahaha

those bbc joints arent libraries (They were directed more towards the private people)

Libraries are defined by a certain way of business. A company i.e. KPM, records a catalog full of music, meaning they try to cover as many genres as possible trying to orientate themselves at the current sound. Then they gave copies of the entire catalog (KPM1000-KPM1299, green series) to TV companies and radio stations for free. In order for the people to use these LPs they were "transfered" which you can often find written on the records. Then after transfering these editors back then actually started chopping short and more lenghty pieces to fit the movie, or production.
Before using the company putting the LP in use had to contact KPM and make a contract for this special piece of music and get the rights to use em. I've found some of my Themes drama joints used in italian giallo movies or similar. Even Drama suite in german TV for some documentary

Funny thing about this is that all LPs were free back then. Only fee for the companies was for the rights to use em. Nowadays there are quite some rare Lib-LPs that go for 80-500 USD. Some one got a spare Mindbender?

I have the Green series and the Red series and they are dope !!
I even have the book for the Green series that comes with the serie!
I also have some UBM and Bruton stuff.
