How do I get different sounds to play on different tracks???

I just got an MPC 4000 and I can't figure out for the life of me how to get different instruments to play on different tracks in a a sequence. Whenever I change the instrument for one track it changes it for all of them! How can I assign istruments so that they can play in seperate tracks.

Ex. Drums in Track 1, Piano in Track 2, Bass in Track 3 . . .
