madlib is killin it on the sp303

Madlib n medaphoar was in London yesterday and I asked madlib straight up if he uses the sp-303 to make beats from scratch and he was like "yup."

I was like how/why would u go from and mpc/sp1200 to a sp303? and his repsone was winding his finger around next to his head as if to say he's crazy.

So it can be dont folks dont think u need to get certain equipment to make hip hop beats.

Madlib is crazy fasho crazy ill

....to think that you could only make hip-hop on one or two machines is crazy...there was hiphop before the mpc right?

i love my mpc, would never part with it but its not a magic box and its features like tightness and ui that attact me.....but i believe any beat can be made on almost any sequencer.....

ok so what if he did,and what he's working with is not industry standard,what his advantage is is that he can work an MPC,AN SP,AND HE WORKS OUT OF A STUDIO,HAS A RECORD DEAL,AND HE IS SOUGHT AFTER AS A PRODUCER!!

what he uses has nothing to do with it. Madlib has been producing hip hop since the early nineties.....not to mention his Uncle was on numerous CTI recordings.....His Uncle was down with H.B. Barnum(who is somewhat responsible for Axelrod's funkiness) plus he has access to the Blue note vaults....Madlib paid his dues, hands down. Sp-303, Mpc, Sp-1200....it dont matter. He can freak em all!

The crazy thing isn't the 303. It's that he recorded the Quasimoto record on a Tascam Cassette 8-Track.
That's crazy.

If you are hungry enough you can make anything on anything. I've made beats hard as 3 day old dog doodoo on the Roland R-8 MKII..

INdeed, I had an onld taskcam 8 trak and I could never make it slam like he does, and what I admire most about madlib is that he can turn out hot beats like lightning. I mean, sheesh, If I finish a beat in 3 days I always feel like I skipped something, then I realize its just being familiar with my gear, I mean stuff that used to take me a couple days to figure out how to do now I can just zip-zap done in five minutes.

FWIW, the sp 303 sampler KILLS the 2000/XL sampler on sample time and realtime effects. Also the resampling is dope, realtime timestretch, people sleep. The MPC seuencer is better, but you can really make it happen with the 303, as Mr. Madlib does (met him yesterday ;)
