Ya I'm still a little confused. So if I usually bang out my drums in 100bpm, I change it to 200bpm and bang them out on that?

By peezie Fri Jun 24, 2005 8:16 am
yeah, but play half time to 200bpm so its actually the same as 100bpm. You get doubled resolution that way. 8 bars in 200bpm=4 bars 100bpm.

I'm confused :?

Doubling your tempo doubles your resolution...

...Why would you want to double your resolution?

This is nothing new really... If you dont understand how it works, just try it. 1x2=2 right?

If you need to ask, we can't explain, spend some time with the manual...

to get your hats closer together. if your beat is slow, then theres biger gaps between your hats. u double the resolution, but program your drums like u aint dun sh!t. so in the end u get drums that sound like 90bpm, while your hats r going at 135.

Basically, it allows you to be more intricate... :)

I've been getting lots of email from those who needed a more detailed explanation of the "double tempo" trick, so it's probably easier to just post it here.

If you're programming a beat that is 85 bpm (R. Kelly's "Bump and Grind", for example), you create a two-bar pattern and set the MPC at 85. Your metronome is set to 1/4 and the quantize is set at either 1/8th or 1/16th.

In a straight pattern, the kick would hit on clicks 1 and 3, the snare hits on clicks 2 and 4. When you double the tempo to 170 bpm, your metronome will (obviously) click twice as fast, but you must program your beat so the kick hits on clicks 1 and 5, snare hits on 3 and 7. In other words, even though the metronome is going faster, you are programming the drums in half-time. When the metronome is turned off, your pattern will sound like the tempo is 85bpm, even though the MPC is playing at 170.

The reason this trick is popular is because the increased resolution causes the MPC's timing to sound tighter, but still "human". In addtion, it's helpful when you're programming busy, intricate hi-hat patterns. The "feel" is noticeably different from the regular way of programming. Personally, I've never had to quantize at anything higher than 1/16ths when I double the tempo.

For those who need it, I hope this helps.

Instead of doubling the bar amounts, you can also just change your TSIG setting to 8/4, instead of 4/4. That way you just have your bars twice as long, but playing twice as fast (double tempo) instead of making 2 bars (on the MPC) sound like just one.

In case that was confusing, heres a diagram:

4/4 example (2 bars):
1___2___3___4___

K_______S_______
K_______S_______

8/4 example (1 bar):
1___2___ 3___4___5___6___7___8___

K_______S_______K_______S_______

So basically, the longer bars makes a more natural feel. One bar will still equal one bar, with 4 beats per bar because they technically play twice as fast. You'll hear 8 ticks per bar, but each pair of ticks now corresponds to one beat (top and bottom).

To sum up what I'm saying is that if you double the tempo AND double the TSIG, then you get double resolution without changing the number of bars you have (so when comparing beats you don't need to do math with the bar quantities) or altering how you would normally play, except the increased metronome rates. There used to be a tutorial about this, but the Tutor has smartened up and ain't giving the sh!t away for free no more  , so I suggest to everyone to drop the $40 and get the ebook, 'cause this cat's got KNOWLEDGE!!!
