Who dj's out?

Well I can't really complain about the drunks too much, because I drink while I play as well, but these people can get out of control.

I once had some huge skinhead want to break my turntable because I wouldn't play anything he wanted. He looked like the juggernaut...

had a drunk chick tryin to holler and pass me a beer over the mixer while I was strobing 2 beats lsat week.......then some promoter wanted my contact info while I was eqing a blend.

I'm not a DJ but I had to fill in for a friend who knew I'd never DJed before, but he gave me a bunch of his CD's and I went through my vinyl to bring some stuff out. So the first Time I ever Djed was a paying gig at a club. I was real nervous I got there and hour early to practice. Most of it was house so it was real easy but you know I was workin the cuts if I wasn't feeling the blend!!! I had 3 people come up and ask me for some shyt, yup, 50 cent, don;t have it, janet jackson, and some Reggae (they got their request, but it was scientific dub ) Needless to say I will never request anything from a DJ ever again, it really just sucks. Next time I'm just gonna say no requests and only listen to the owner, **** the bar tender etc.

I'm trying to mix unknown material, playin house CD's at +11 pitch, and drunk cats askin me for 50 cent?? yeah, that will blend right in.

Worked out well, the owner ever paid me extra at the end because I was getting compliments all night.

Not really trying to get into it, but it was fun at the end, plus I got to play some choice vinyl on a big system.

I haven't played out for a few years now, but when I did I was mixing old disco with deep house, lots of Paradise Garage & Loft classics, original Chicago house .... things like that.

My way to deal with requests was to act really surprised that someone was wanting to interupt me in the first place & then make it seem like it was really wierd for them to want to ask for a specific record.

"......Why did you pay to come out & hear records you've got at home???? ...... What .... have you got some special dance routine to it worked out????"

I love to play a f*ed up version of requests if I have it. The last gig I had someone request Billie Jean, so I played the Bernard Jackson Jr. one, which is a rare private press 12" with a insane dub reggae version. I'm like "...and now by special request!" They was lookin at me all screwy hahahhahahahha sukas! I should have played the Afro Heat version...

LOL, the best thing is when someone requests a modern song that you have the original of in your crates, and you fool them by playing the old version, they get all excitied like "that's my request" and then what they thought was Jenny From The Block becomes Watch Out Now or Crazy In Love becomes Are You My Woman, and the look on their face is priceless. I love pulling that shit.

i second that^^^ i get looks like maphucker dont kno his music, so when they come up i just school them and they walk back all feeling stupid,

it's great to be a Dj who knows his music and where it comes from,
cause theres hella people out there that dont kno sh!t and need to be school'd.

Been DJing for time now but not so much lately, like you ede my hey day was the mid 90's, played all over, even got a couple of gigs in Poland playing Techno, played on there national radio show on the saturday night slot which was cool. Poland's not the greatest venue but the people were top draw, couldnt do enough for ya, very nice people, funny sometimes the link between wealth & being an A hole.
Anyways played a bar just this saturday nothing major, old house stuff with some hip hop thrown, stetsasonic, eric b that kinda thing.. I worked out the best way to deal with requests is to act all disappointed when they ask ya for something cos you like that tune sooo much but you left it at home, that way you keep them happy thinking they got good music taste but you dont have to play that sh!t, I got asked for madonna, birthday songs(whatever the f*** they are?), justin f***ing timberlake.. It really pisses me off cos i come from a dance underground scene & I dont give a toss bout commercial sh!t but like peeps said ya getting paid for doing a job so gotta keep punters happy while educating, know what i mean....

I play a bunch of house styles (tribal, chicago, hard, tech, and hardcore w/ some hip hop sprinkled in). Style depends on location, venue, and party. Big floor booking have been slow for like the last year, so I have been producing a lot so that I can play more of my own tracks. Most recognisible places I played were Nation in DC, and the old school Tunnel (97-98).

I just spun a deep house set last night in Cambridge. I had 2 people come up and ask for 50 cent. I told the the girl "It's Deep House night... sorry no hip hop". Then she came back asking if I would play it just for her (I think her friends put her up to it... she had big ta ta's though ). I said no.
Then another bloke came up asking for it and I told him no hip hop tonight mate. Then he stood there for a minute looking puzzled and asked "So you're playing it next, right?".
SECURITY!!! People just don't get it.

when broad like that used to come up and ask i would tell thenm that i had it at home and if she wanted i can play it just for her back at the pad , then they realy give you this look.

i used to share a flat with a dude who played strictly pop hiphop, 50, jay-z, chingy etc, so sometimes when i was grabbing records to play out (mostly bars/cafe's, a couple of one off clubs gigs) id grab a few of his records with accapellas. So without fail some random hot girl comes up and thinks just because she's bangin im going to play 50 for her. So i just smile and say if you buy me a drink, which she does (gender equality that muthaphukas!). So im playing like some peaches, black keys, spanky wilson, and i dropped young & holt unlimted "young & holtful", and just scratched the one phrase "find me in the club" in and out of the track. I was just being a smart arse, but she liked it, and now we are good freinds despite her terrible taste in music.
