I can feel that.

Its kinda true, if the old school hip hop cats had had the choice back then between 12, 16, and 24 bit, they probably would have chosen 16 or 24.

They didnt have a choice, 12 bit was thier only option, or some of the 8 bit stuff. To them, 12 bit was better than the older school 8 bit stuff so it was "State of the art" to them.

Theirs too many variables to say why they used what they used.

Initally it was about what was only avaliable i'm sure. But then the Emax II, EPS16, Asr10, S1000/S1100, became avaliable in 1990. 2/3 yrs after the SP/MPC 60's. So after 1990, i'd say it was a consciencce desicion to rock the 12-bit classics. If they wanted bigger and brighter, the options were there. Not to mention software samplers and sequencers have been around since the early 80's. Same with digital production studios. They coulda went those routes, but didn't for whatever reasons.

I remember Q-tip saying several times that he used the SP specifically because it makes snares sound a special way that no other sampler can.

Rohan, Love that photo, notice the pultecs in the rack too? I am curious what board he uses.

That hiNRG stuff is bigger than I thought over here.

His desk looks like a D&R.

The sound of the Pultects can be heard in all their glory on any of the Proxyon stuff that Michiel did ( Not the stuff that JayVie did ).

Rohan.

Homie's got pultec too, that's too ill.

D&R consoles look pretty cool.

Ayatollah that did Ms Fat Booty uses the 60. Kut Masta Kurt uses the mpc2000 and S950, Hi Tek started on the 60 but moved on to the 3000. Fanatik that did the early Planet Asia stuff uses the 60... it seems alot of 60 users move on to the 3000 eventually. The Beatnuts use the mpc2000 and s950, I know cause they're my idols and I met Juju in a record shop in Queens and we talked about gear and stuff.

Dj Format had an MPC60 on the cover of he's new Lp (If you can't join 'em ... beat 'em)... So he's probaly using one. :D

FatJack used to use a MPC60, not sure nowadays though... alot of the early Abstract Rude and Tribe Unique stuff was FatJack on a 60...

DJ Young Einstein of Ugly Duckling also used a 60 on his earlier stuff, not sure if he ever upgraded or not, but, his newer beats arent as dope as the old stuff if you ask me... could be he switched to a newer piece of equipment...

Hey I just remembered something that I witnessed a few years ago. Well I was buying somethings at a Guitar Center that was on Sunset in Hollywood. Well ya know the one. So I was there and with my girlfriend. While I was in line to pay, a clerk came up to the register with a cart load of music equipment and software. There was a Korg Triton i think I saw some Logic stuff alot of sample CD's and an Akai MPC. At first I was like oh my god someone must be hooking up their home studio or reouftting it. So out of nowhere my girlfriend comes running over all crazed like she just seen a ghost. She runs up to me and says "Oh my Gawd youre not gonna believe this its him!" I reply "Who the heck are you talking about. who's him?" She points to this guy in front of me and apparently it was the guy who was making this huge purchase. He was dressed in a leather jacket wearing black beanie cap looking real - Im a rockstar in desgise - Anyways it's lead singer of The Wallflowers, Jacob Dylan. Unfortunately I havent heard any of their cds since, well maybe a few songs but i have not noticed anything that stands out. However I was in a band and I remember we were in studio and we used a MPC3000 to trigger snare sounds from our drum kit. So maybe he had that going on. Just my 2 cents or 2 pence 2 pesos whatever part of the world youre at.
