Okay, how the hell do ya'll do this? I mean, I've tried using the Zone function, even tried just extracting single kicks and snares. They always sound horrible. There seems to be a quick ass decay, even if I go into the program screen and set the decay to 0. What am I doing wrong?

a common technique is to add some "air", some sort of nothing from a sample to the drum sample and then set the decay value about 20, 30, depending on the lenght of the added air.

i read this in an interview with dj shadow. might check it out:

you could check out the program "recycle", by propellorheads. It adds all the decay tails for you and makes cutting drums easy! I think there is a turorial on the site. The breaks'n'bass program from this site were cut like that so check the demos if u want. peace!

Sometimes, the quick decay is what makes sampled drums sound different.. ity depepnds on the situation tho. If I need a chopped drum to sound 'better,' then I usually leave a bit of space/air at eh end of the sample.. don't chop it perfectly, use your ears.. after that, add some decay to it so it ends a little smoother. Finally, a touch of reverb, and your done. You don't need a computer to chop samples.

Now, what do you do if you have a 1 bar drum loop that you want to fit to your 2 bar sample loop, but the loop just don't seem to loop right. And this isn't just with drum loops, but I tend to get a slight delay in between my loops on the MPC (when in sequence mode). Now, some may say just increase the tempo, but sometimes that just worsens it, because then the loop has a rushed feeling. What do you guys do to remedy this?

Human drummers' time will push and pull a little bit, so two loops of the same length might not always sound completely "in sync."

Chop each loop into pieces (by using "zone" function) and then sequence a pattern that re-creates the loop. That way all the hits will be "in time" and quantized.
