Learning keyboard

I've had a keyboard for over a year, and still haven't learned.I don't know where to start.I don't want lessons-I don't have money, and would like to play by ear, instead of just being able to read music and play it.I'm pretty good with pitch-hearing, in software, I can load a jazz loop (sampled), and click in notes to a bass patch and everything sounds good, but this takes a whole lot of un-necesary time that would quickly be eliminated if i could just play.

1st off...I don't know the proper hand posisitions...

the best way to learn is to just take a class or something...i took a lil 2 unit class as an elective at my school for one semester and i had never touched a piano before now im pretty good. if ur not in school try to go to a community college and take a class for a few $$. Or just buy a book and teach ur self

there are thousands of books that can teach you how to play....I learned playing guitar with books; and it worked!! (of course taking lessons would have been more effective but like you I didn't have the cash)

you've had your keyboard for over a year right?? you're going to have to try a different approach. lessons and a lot of practice is going to be the best thing for you. what is it that you're wanting to know?? i might be able to help you out. and if you want, i'll send you some midi files of me playing the piano, i can show you some stuff.

this is weird...you want to learn to play by ear but you want someone to tell you how to do it?

there is no quick fix to being a good musician. Practice Practice Practice..Lessons never hurt anyone

my mom started making me play keys at church while i was in highschool and i couldn't play anything. i learned by watching other guys that could play and trying to play what i heard on the radio. but i would practice all the time too.

Not everybody is ment to play the keys, I am a classical pianist, the piano has always made sense to me. I could always vibe with the piano since i was a kid.(same with the sax)

I also tried to learn the gutiar,,,,,, i dident get that same vibe no matter how hard i tried.. i mean i could eek out some chourds but i just couldent get it.

Point being , mabye the keys just aint your thing.....casue u should be able to play basic stuff by ear

I learned the guitar from a cdrom. I'm sure they have them for pno. But like CLASSIC said, some people have a music "bone". Some don't.

you have a keyboard for over a year but don't know where to put your fingers, you dont want lessons- so dont wanna be taught, you don't have any money- or more likely not willing to spend any on improving your key skills, you wanna learn by ear but want someone to show you how- yet you dont wanna be taught...

so what your asking is for some pro keys player to usb the info from their brain to yours for free...aint gonna happen..change your approach- realise that either someone needs toteach you or yopu need to teach yourself- you need to do the work for yourself- forum guys can only tell you what they have done....

The piano is like a tool for translating whats going on inside my head. If I cant hear it, I cant play it. You at least shud practice melody in your head/ humming it etc then maybe try and find the keys and string it together.

Your ears shud atleast be at level of being able to recognise a good an bad note (interms of working well together) The more u play with it the better you'l get . Melodys will spawn outta nothing sometimes but you still kinda need a basis.

You gotta have music in your head at least tho or your jus gonna press keys hoping sumthing jus jumps out at you. Thats 1 long shot to many

Theres a lot of info out there....I aint trained or anything, but Iknow my way around the keys (but only because of my ear) The over techy stuff I aint really gone into.

Try a few approaches an see whats what. 1 may work for you better than another. Like a few others have mentioned , you can really be told how best to go about it, unless your gonna learn from scratch with a teacher etc

LEssons aint gonna mean shit wit out the talent... i think we had this debate before in another thread. But if u aint got the musical ear to begin with lessions are just gonna waste ur time
