Recording

How exactly are some of the guys in here recording the beats made on the MPC into cubase. Are you converting the sequences from the MPC into wavs and importing them into cubase or is there a direct way of recording straight from the MPC into a track in Cubase.

it's called multi tracking. you first need to have a soundcard on your pc that accept multiple inputs. then you also need some type of midi interface then you just arrange your tracks on the mpc to be assigned to one of the 6 outputs and those would go to the inputs on your soundcard, connect your midi cables between the mpc and your computer, arm the tracks in cubase and press record.


this is an overview and not a descriptive tutorial but if you want, i can tell you exactly how to do it. but first do you have what i mentioned above?

Yeah, ive got an e-mu dsp 404 soundcard which has two audio inputs, a left and a right. Would that be enough? My midi interface is an M-Audio midisport usb 2x2.

yeah u can do that, but u would have to track 2 tracks at a time. sync it via midi so its all in time.

your midi interface is fine but like pen said with your current sound card you would have to track it 2 tracks at a time. i would suggest getting an audio interface that has at least 4 inputs (simutaneous recording) something like the Lexicon Omega. it costs about $300US. it can do everything you need to track into cubase. it also has midi I/O.

Thats cool, thanks for the reply. I recently just bought the E-MU so I doubt I'll be upgrading any time soon. Would it be possible for you to explain the method even just for the two tracks at a time? This would be much appreciated.

not a problem

first in cubase set up your syn as midi clock. that's the only sync method the mpc1000 can understand.

next connect your midi out from the uno to midi in on the mpc and midi out from the mpc to midi in on the uno.

then connect a 1/4" cable to assignable output 1 on the mpc and connect the other end to input 1 on your 404. then do the same with output 2 on the mpc as well as on input 2 on your 404.

load up your seq and for track one on your seq goto the mixer screen and select pan - then pan hard left then select the out tab and scroll to 12 (on the top) for track two on your seq do the same but pan hard right.

you just assigned 2 tracks to record in cubase. the other tracks in your seq will just be played through the main stereo outs and not recorded by cubase.

in cubase setup two tracks with the appropriate source inputs and arm them for recording.

press record in cubase and you will notice the mpc is now playing and cubase is recording. when you get to the end of the song. do it all over again, changing tracks 1 and 2's pan and out in the mixer screen. put them back to the way they were and then continue with tracks 3 and 4, 5 and 6, however many tracks you have in your seq.

Alright...I think I may have it, but it's really low sounding...it also sounds like it's only on one side...anything I can do?

I think that this is exactly what I was looking for... I needed to know how to seperate output 1/2 & 3/4 on the mpc, because when you change the assign out from st to 1/2 or 3/4 they play both... so do I just pan each one?
