Use a noise gate on the PRE-RECORDING, just enough to cancel the environmental noise, but not u. If u you use VST HOSTS then I'm sure once of use could sort u out with a VST plugin that can help.

with regards to the Mic Moddeller, that is a serious tool, though i never get to use it cause my mic is already serious as it is. anyway, i got the prog if u....cough cough....*ouch someone hit me*

I was able to accomplish it for around $260... rule of thumb... you can negociate any price... I do it all the time... any type of store... clothing, music, whatever... look at life like buying a car... believe you me... you can always get a discount... it just harder when thens are commission based...

u can also go on ebay type in studio foam and buy it there usually real cheap like $1 pere square just like in the major studios

I think sometimes you should just keep the background noise. It's texture. Some people put it in on purpose.

I have found that this method works best for me. You can find tons of oise gate vsts on the web.....

I have been told that some middle to higher end condenser mics have some sort of "gate switch" on them. Anyone know if this is true? If it is, this would work as well.

I use a noise gate and set it up so that it only allows sound to be recorded when my vocalist starts rapping, his voice volume is much louder than the background noise so all you end up hearing is his voice. I use a hardware noise gate cause I could never get the plug-in version to work for me.

The best solution I've found is to invest in a nice powerful preamp (min +50db) and buy a SM7 or EV20 dynamic mic and background noise is a thing of the past. Won't do well for recording and acoustic guitar... but for vocals you've got it.

Another option is to look into mics with a hypercardiod pickup pattern.

Anyway, I have a nice condenser mic that I haven't really touched in over a year.
