I copy the original sample 2 or 3 times just incase i **** it up. I HAVE pressed wrong buttons or spazz out erasing a good part of the sample. Then i would sample an empty sound as per El's method. Then i copy the blank sound a few times and assign them to pads along with the original sample so I can just stay in the edit screen without going back and forth, as leaving edit screen purges the temp cache. I made a program with 3 rows of blank samples and 1 empty row for source samples, for chopping purposes. load it right up and dont have to do the sampling silence and copying routine every time. Zone in on the original sample, copy then paste on to a blank sample, then delete zone so i know i made that into a separate sample and out of the way. It's not always necessary, but when im stoned and need to chop a long break, I lose track of things and end up with multiple same parts.
With stabs and such, I just sample it short to begin with. After all that, I just pick out one or two best sounding kick, snare and hat. Since im on a 3k, im not on such strict memory restriction. Newer models have truncate function, but wheres the fun in that?
