I just found out last week about a thing called soundfonts. I always thought they were some wack sounds for gamers and Sounblaster freaks. It turns out you can buy soundfonts real cheap from Emu. These are the original sounds from the planet phatt and some other modules.
So if you own a computer there are some nifty ways you can put all of this to good use.
1. Buy the sounds, and convert them to wav. to load in your MPC. You can download a converter for pc here: http://www.hammersound.net/mirrors/last_night/sf.htm
This may seem pointless, but the Emu soundsets are really good and a lot cheaper than most sample cd's.
2. If you can run a vst host on your computer and it has a midi input, get a vst sampler like emagic EXSP24.
This will load SF2 samples directly. It's like having a planet phatt inside your computer! Of course you not limited to using SF2 only, you can also load Akai disks for instance. And as a bonus, you can export chopped loops from ReCycle 2.0 as SF2 and have them ready to use in seconds with EXSP24. No more exporting to zipdrives for me, i'm in sample-heaven :D

I'm sorry for the long post, maybe this is all old news but i just wanted to let you know.
You can get the Emu samples from: http://www.soundfont.com/

yeah, I got a boy who works for Creative Labs (they own emu and make the SB series of soundcards) and he hipped me to these, I didnt think they would sound good, but they do. Almost spot on. Some are a little off, but most are 100%. I got the mo phatt, planet phatt, the proteus orchestra/pop rock/vintage synth (the rhoades on this is PHATTTTTTTT) and a few more. I like to load them up in my APS (the emu aps is essentially a SB Live Platinum, with WAAAAYYY BETTER in's/outs D/A converters etc., its got 4 1/4 inch ins and 6 1/4 inch outs)

and I run midi into it, and record out of that PC into another PC.
I love the soundfonts the only beef I got, is that you aint got no knobs for real time tweaking, so all the adjustment of sounds takes a while to do in a sequencer, but other then that, a Mo Phatt for 40 dollars rocks.

So these sound fonts contain all the sounds that are avaliable in the EMU moludes?

do the mo' phat sondfonts really sound that good and is it the same sound set that comes with the mo'phat? the NNXT sampler in Reason can read soundfonts and the soundfonts i've loaded up into it haven't sounded that great.

I never owned the original mo phatt so i can't compare 1 on 1. But the emu sounds are hot. I think most of these are the original sounds from the modules. Take my word son, for this kinda money you should go get these sounds.

YEs, I have access to both "phatt's" and I plugged em up and did a side by side (ala MPC 3000's blind MPC test) wit my boy who owns them (since he has waaaayy more xperience listening to his phatt's), he wasnt able to tell the difference on MOST of them, some of the sounds he could tell though but these were mainly the hats and cymbals, which I dont use I sample my drums 100%, also the soundfonts dont have ALL the sounds, just most. (this is how they keep peeps buying the units I guess) if you look on Sounfont.com (the official site) and peep the pdf of the download patches and compate it to the list from the "phatt's" you see they are missing some of the sounds, they say "the eliminate the ones that are not the most popular" in actuality some of the stuff they cut is good, but the SF banks DO include the hot ones, man, I LOVE The Bass sounds off of these tho and to me having access
to all the bass sounds is wortht the 35 bux or whatever it is to DL, plus w/ vienna you can edit sf banks PHAT! its sooo easy to edit SF banks its scary.

basically the proteus ones (i used to have a proteus so I could judge these myself) are spot on. the strings are phat, the bass is phat, most of the drums are phat, the guitar licks are also phat. If you can get a hold of them I would get:
both the Mo phatt and the planet phatt
the vintage keys
the pop/rock pack (dope pianos in this one, they have the one that the "id walk 1000 miles" pop song uses, and if you edit a patch with that and an electric it sounds cool, and alot of the sounds from pop stars on it)
the orchestral one (nice kettle drums and cool precussion PHAT solo strings, I layer the cello, viola violin sounds to make a cool patch that sounds like its "underwater")

basically, if you can do with: using non realtime control from the mpc (or in reason you are all set) then its phat. Creative owns emu so there is a direct in from them, the sounds are the same from the modules tho. I was amazed I was thinking they would be some cheezy stuff (like SB live is cheese) but its not, I think the SF thing didnt get love cuz when they dropped it worked with Creative sc that nobody is tryin to use, its like owning "zoom" gear, foo's think that its gonna be whack cuz SB is whack, so SF get slept on.

the volume of sounds though is huge and if you read the spec;s the sample rate, bit rate etc. of the samples is the same, IE they used the same sound from the module to make the sf banks.

Thanks for starting this post Ieism this is just what i've been looking for!! Does anybody know the file extension of the sounds so i can see if AWAVE can convert them? I see .sf and .sf2 just wanna be sure before i buy. I wanna use these sounds on my ASR10. Are all the Proteus 1,2,3 good? i'm thinking about the bundle for $99 w/ planet phatt, vintage keys, and proteus 1,2 & 3 add the mo phatt for $40 6 kits for less than half of 1 module can't beat that!

It's not a case of using the same sounds from the sound module to make the sound fonts - it's the other way round...

ALL sound module sounds are created as sound fonts - how else do you think they can fit 1000s of sounds into a 16MB or 32MB ROM board? This is what Eddie from samplecraze.com does for a living. He's just completed a new Emu ROM board for their next module - each sound font is around 1 - 5 bytes in size (some are virtually 0 bytes!).

Hence the sound font will sound exactly the same as the sound from the module (as they are identical) - the only difference will be due to the equipment you use to play back the sound fonts. Basically, a sound module is just a glorified sound font player.

You can open up a sound font (sf2) in AWAVE and convert it to whatever format you want.

I have all of those and they slump. the bass is worth 100 dollars for the, like 150-200 bass patches, all of which are pretty useable.

SF2 is the format the ones you named are in, SF (the first one) is pretty old and they sf2 is the standard now.

I dunno if awave will read em or not, I

Is there any way to do a "mass" conversion of the sounds all at once or do you have to convert each sound individually?

You can batch convert in AWAVE with a couple of clicks - it will also rename your files for you at the same time.

Dunno really. When someone asks me i guess. You didn't miss much last time anyway, the soundsystem sucked and the guy i was battling didn't even know how to use an mpc. I'll let you know when there's some mpc action in Amsterdam.

I took a second look the bundle with proteus 1,2,3 vintage keys and planet phatt only gives half of each kit so I bought planet phatt and i'll buy the other ones one at a time. (prob just one proteus though) Now in awave when i used batch conversion it only converts 143 sounds but if i open the whole collection and convert 1 by 1 i get over 1100 sounds why is that??
