west coast sound

does anyone know how to get that kick snare kick snare west coast sound to swing, im talking about that wc, kurupt, etc sound. a lot of that og west coast sound doesn't have intricate drum patterns, just that kick snare kick snare, but they get that basic pattern to f*ing bang, does anyone know a good technique, when i try to lay it down like that, it sounds f*ing plain.

i've always felt that synths define/mold a tight west coast sound. perhaps your drums are straight. maybe the reason that it sounds "f*ing plain" has to do with the melody or lack there of. but i'm not really sure since i haven't heard the beat. good luck

Kicks should be anchored on beat, snares/claps offset and delayed a couple of ticks, hats and percussion should swing....

You might be forgetting the brush or bellsy sound that is anchored on each beat and not only accents the snare AND the kick, but also provides a bit of a "transition" between the snare and the kick, relieving some of the plainess. Just add synth, and your golden!

SECRET: -----> Stack your synths and try different octaves....

Copy Track 1 (Midi) to Track 2, 3 , 4.... and choose different instruments, mainly synths, but experiment and change octaves or leave the same depending on the "sound" you are trying to achieve....


oh yeah, and do everything else they said....

I notice alot of claps layered with snares layered with a brush/hat on the up, 808 on super sub almost unoticeable. On timing, kick = no shift, snares = shift ahead by maybe 2. Good luck.

Believe it or not, those 3 beats (WC Banger 1 & 2 and Poppin Pussy) were made about 2 years ago when all i had was an MPC 2000xl and a cheap ass Radio Shack keyboard that i bought off ebay for $70. I had to tweak the sound on the keyboard so much to avoid it from sounding too "cheap" and unprofessional. Those beats were recorded in Sonar. That keyboard has been so loyal to me that i decided to keep it and i still use it in some background stuff. I was an intern at Sony Music at the time and i managed to sell two beats on major label projects using that damned thing. anyway, keep in touch. peace.
