"Serious Synth Users"
Wrong forum dude! This is rompler land!
"I know the Juno 106 is more popular, do think the Oberheim Matrix is just as good??"
Maybe consider the Matrix 1000 which is a preset only Matrix 6 in a rack. However, you can still edit the sounds via external editors so all is not so bad.. Also, the Matrix 6 is very laborious to edit so perhaps you will revert to an editor anyway.. I do also know that the Matrix synths have very slow envelopes so not ideal for really punchy bass sounds..
If you are going to consider a racked version (either the 1000 or the Matrix 6r) maybe then consider the Cheetah MS-6 which is pretty much a Matrix sound wise and architecture wise. However, the Cheetah has one massive advantage over the Matrix - its multitimbral! There is even a 3rd party O/S you can get for it that allows full CC control and adds other advantages. Its done by Colin Fraser (the guy that did my 303 midi kit design and install).
The 106 is another nice DCO synth and I would guess alot more fun to use because of all the sliders.. I am very much into interfaces so I would tend to go for the 106 but then probably buy a Cheetah MS-6 as well (Im not very good at making A or B decisions as my answer is always 'get A and B'!)
Let us know what you do or if you have more questions. Analogue Heaven is THE place for anything analogue related. If you search their archives there will be a ton of info..
