Ntalec-

Amen. The Emax and SP are two totally different machines. Different sound, different flow. You certainly can't right the SP off because you caught in Emax. I also agree a lota people love to write the SP off as workstation. It's a fantastic all in one box, but you got to give it some time. It definately isn't giving up the pussy with out some work. It's timing is heartless for amatuers too!

Do you think this would be a bad move?? I mean ive never used an sp1200 but my favorite beats seem to be made on it and since i use the 3000 for mainly drums, would the sp1200 take its place as far as being my main beat box? would i be hurtin for the mpc's features or would my mac's sequencer (dp 4.5) plus some modules, tables and a mixer be a good fit with the sp? LEt me know what you think cause I'm seriously considering doing this. peace

Dont do it. And this sounds weird, but if you play the 3000 with the quantize off, with some nice samples, it sounds (to me at least) like a 1200.

yes quantize off is def the way to do it. I guess Ill chill and stop being a fiend. Maybe i can cop an sp12 later.

Nah man, I got n Emax and would love to have a 1200 to mess with.

Denzekiel, just try and get some time on one at a friend's place or music store or something, that might make all the difference.

I don;t think it's just fiending because you did want to trade.

Try it out first, then you'll know.

The 3000 with quanitize off sounds nothing like an SP. How can it? When the most classic SP programming was double timed and phase locked? ie. heavy quanitization.

Turning your auto correct off (quanitize), just makes your patterns sound sloppy like Dilla and Lib'. Which btw, those cats got all ya'll fooled. They quanitizing they just shifting notes around manually afterwords to make it "groove" or be more loose sounding. Take my word for it, Dilla and Lib are not playing 128 bars of freestyle patterns trust that.

Like I said before D', except no substitutions. Stick with the MPC cause you want the MPC vibe and sound, do the SP if you want a much simpler interface and a completely different vibe.

You want that crispy Emu Sp-1200 sound..

1. Sample direct in your PC;
2. Resample to Sp-1200 rate;
3. Sample THAT in your MPC 3000;
4. Keep your 3000.

Heres a prime example of the SP-1200 sound + sequencer. Raw too so thiers no processing going on. This is wax, to SP, to mix output. All ya'll MPC 3000 cats, process away, and try and make you 3000 move and sound like this. I'll even give you the OG sample so you can flip it yourself. Won't sound even remotely close. Like I was saying, the 3000 is nice too, but it's DIFFERENT.. and certainly nothing like an SP.

Keep it or sell it, I don't even care. I'm just here to dispell the myths.

As always this thread just fell into the abyss.

The SP ain't no Reality TV Show, if you haven't lived it then you can't even begin to understand it.
This is what drives me bananas, we get so many SP or 60/3000 related statements that clearly show that the person hasn't put time in on that box.
Same is true if a XL user talks about a 60 without logging some serious hours on it, it just clearly shows.

Couple of quick points that any REAL SP user already understands:

-No computer is gonna sound like a SP.
-No other machine will f*ck up your notes like that slow running processor and limited PPQ of the SP (except maybe a Drummulator or LM-1 cause they stumble and limp in a funny way)
-The Emax has a very similar (not same) sound to the SP, but unless you seq from the SP it's fails the test
-Seq the SP from another seq cuts the SP personality in 1/2 ( why not just program your MPC from Logic and kill the MPC's personality?)
-Listening to songs produced on the SP won't even begin to clue you on how it works and what it can really do

I really believe that a few key machines are important to having THAT sound. The MPC60, S950, SP12/SP1200 all provide a classic 12-bit sound.
Classic because so many hits you'll recognize have used those machines to their fullest.

Based on what you've said so far, you are really more a candidate for an SP12 turbo, and not an EMAX, and NOT an SP1200.

The MPC3000 is a potent workstation; if you really just need some drum tracks then the SP12 turbo will cost you about 2wice the Emax price, will have everything the SP1200 has except the DD disk drive, and the 10 seconds sampling (but the turbo's 5 seconds are plenty). It's the best solution that noone talks about.

Additionally, I mostly think that all anyone REALLY needs are two machines (2), and WAX. Buying machines for inspiration (which works too) is EXPENSIVE AS HELL, whereas if you funnelled $400 into some well chosen dollar-bin or $5 wax, you'd have material to keep you chopping and looping for well over a year.

An SP12 and MPC3000 is more than enough fire power to be the next best producer out there. You really don't need more circuits. Get more inspiration. Seriously.

^Truth.

But you have to remember he was conisdering trading, not purchasing, which costs nothing. While haveing an SP-12 coupled with a 3000 (PUTS style) is peace, it isn't going to do anything for his inspiration. Just give him some better sounding drums. If the MPC isn't working out for him work flow wise, perhaps a switch to a new interface all together is the solution. Thats all I'm saying.

Ok, the trade idea isn't good IMHO.

But you can sync the MPC to the SP (which I what I do), and program everything SPish on the SP itself. That's exactly the same feel you'd get from working on an SP1200. EXACTLY.

With the MPC in slave mode, you're actually producing drums on the SP, and using the MPC like a glorified S950 that can sequence itself with amazing precision and swing.

Workflow wise, I think really that the SP is easier, but the MPC3K, well, it really makes it MUCH easier to do anything that pushes boundaries.

Like, if you had the SP1200 alone, you're limited. It's fun but it's still pretty marginal in terms of what you can accomplish. I've had mine since 96. I learned to use the SP in 93. I've never regretted getting one, but I know it just doesn't do a lot of what is interesting today.

The SP is a machine that can be outgrown. You can master it for sure, and that takes more than a year or two. But then, you may need to sample something where the juice is in the frequencies above 11KHZ. The SP will make that frustrating.

Ultimately, if you had you MPC3k around (so you can keep your MPC skills), and had an SP12 which can be a standalone too--seriously, it can--then you're set for like 3-4 years. But I think if you change-up again, you'll have wasted time.

Buckle down eventually, is all I'm sayin.

SP's dont make dope beats, people make dope beats.. some do it with SPs some with MPCs some with DR 303s... I think your boy before had the best advice.

Pick one and master it.

By peezie Sat Jul 09, 2005 9:43 pm
If you cant bang out ill ones outta the 3k, sp isnt gonna help. its just gonna be another beat coming out of a different box.

All the comments about being dope and talented are fine.. but since I haven't heard duke's beats and since I actually got nothing against someone lacking talent but who fulfills themselves making beats, I'm suggesting a good alternative.

And while it's true that the 3k is enough to make illwons, you still ain't gonna EVER come close to making it sound like it came out an SP, and if you do, you wasted too much time when you shoulda rather wasted some dough getting an SP12.

So all the talent-related assertions aside, I think my advice is pretty 'to the point', you know?
