Every one of the MPC's has defining characteristics. I expect the MPC1000 to be no different in this respect. First time buyers can start with this model but others shouldn't sell their XL to get it unless they really need the portability.
I know what you mean about the MPC4000 sound. The machine has loads of features but it's like the sound has a flat response curve. This is why I keep coming back to the MPC2000XL even though its power and user interface is nothing like the MPC4000. I rarely use my MPC60 and MPC3000 though. They have limitations that slow down music production.
It is hard to say at this point what will happen with the value of the MPC2000XL. The value shouldn't drop as much as you think. In December AKAI is supposed to release the new blue color MPC2000XL's. Four retailers already told me some versions of the MPC2000XL have sold out and they are not getting any more of them. If your friend wants another tan/beige one, he better get it now. The tan/beige model is the classic MPC. Last chance, now or never for a new one. We are at a special transition moment in MPC history.
You don't use Song Mode? How the heck do you survive? Do you just use the MPC for live playing?
